parrot toys

Our feathered favorites are big mischief-makers and naughty ones. Their curiosity sometimes borders on self-destruction. It is not uncommon for a curious budgerigar to get stuck somewhere, eat the wrong thing, climb in the wrong place. In order to protect the parrot from the troubles that they so cleverly find, you need to offer him a toy.

This is a compromise. It doesn’t make much sense to simply forbid not climbing over books, because it can crush or it’s not worth sitting on the floor for a feathered one. Of course, you can drive him away and even express your displeasure to him too, but if the bird has nothing to do, it will stubbornly seek adventure in the most incredible places in your house. And even those things that at first glance seemed harmless, for your bully can turn into a disaster.

What are the toys for parrots

Birds often appreciate toys made from improvised means – homemade. Parrots choose some items as entertainment, and you, noticing their sympathy for a particular shape or color, can embody their preferences in a toy that will surely become your parrot’s favorite.

A huge selection in pet stores or online stores allows you to choose a toy not only to your taste, but also based on the parrot’s sympathy for pranks.

Bells and balls are popular with all types of parrots, you just pick up a toy according to the size and abilities of the bird.

A parrot basketball court is also a great way to have fun with your pet. Birds love throwing balls and trick training is fun for all parties.

You can also purchase a small piggy bank and teach the feathered one to throw coins into it.

Birds like to push toy carts, put rings on a peg, and sort cubes or mugs by color or size.

Swings, ladders, beads, cars and windmills are just a small part of those toys that can be purchased at pet stores and online stores.

Safety regulations

Branches of oak, pear, bird cherry and poplar are dangerous for parrots, so they are forbidden to be used for toys. From the branches of fruit trees (except for pears), wonderful toys are obtained.

Metals such as zinc, copper and brass should not be present in the bird’s home.

Cheap Chinese plastic is dangerous not only for people – birds can crush, swallow, injure or get poisoned by a low-quality toy.

If you want to make a toy out of wood, then before using the branches, boil and rinse well in running water.

Cardboard paper, paper towel tubes, and toilet paper can be microwaved.

Threads, ropes and ropes for the production of toys are used everywhere. The main thing is that it should be linen, sesal, hemp, jute or cotton. When you see that the parrot has disheveled such material, you should either replace it with a new one or remove the toy from the bird. Otherwise, the pet can get tangled with claws, and given the fidgetiness of parrots, it can be completely wrapped in broken threads, which can lead to death.

After purchasing a toy in a store, it should be disinfected: pour over with boiling water and pour over chamomile tincture, after complete drying, you can install a new fun on the playground or in the pet’s cage.

Toys, like play stands, should be washed periodically.

Homemade toys

The idea for a do-it-yourself toy often comes to the owner spontaneously, plus everything – the parrot often actively helps in this. Therefore, caps from sparkling water of various colors, various buttons, beads, ropes made of natural fibers (hemp, jute, sisal) and, of course, tree branches are used.

From rods and twigs we construct the so-called “nibbles”. For this, willow or birch shoots are used (if you come across them that are not very flexible, then in addition to the usual treatment in the form of scalding with boiling water, hold the branches a little in hot water). Next, tie the twig into a knot and begin to twist and wrap it.

The size of the balloon depends on the type of parrot and your plans for it. You can weave a hoop and hang this ball in it, or the huge ball itself can act as a separate chewing toy. With natural threads, fasten your craft and hang it on a game stand or in a cage.

Using jute threads and twigs cut to the same length, you can build a rope ladder or a hammock / hut.

Also, if you attach a stick to the end of the rope, you get a kind of bungee swing, which will be popular with feathered tomboys.

Beads are constructed from wooden blocks, plastic caps are added there, a cone can be fixed on top, which the birds will be happy to explore.

Using a jar of thick plastic, fill it with grains by a third, for greater “explosiveness” you can add beans and peas.

Do not forget that all toys should be designed for your type of parrot, what is good for a budgerigar can be dangerous for a jakoshi. The beak of larger parrots is much stronger and they can bite, swallow and injure themselves with any small and fragile objects.

Small parrots can get tangled in ropes and too bulky structures. There must be a correspondence between the sizes of toys and their feathered owners.

Of course, one should not underestimate the wavy and lovebirds, these are still rodents. It is not difficult for them to open a crack or a chip on a toy. Therefore, carefully check all objects that amuse the birds for damage and the safety of the material.

Parrots have a lot of “respect” for swings, whether homemade or industrial.

If there is a playground for a parrot, the owner’s imagination has a place to roam. You can often rearrange, replacing and supplementing the complex with new toys.

Most species of parrots are very sociable and energetic by nature. Birds always have something to do, and if you don’t provide them with the tools to have fun, they’ll find it on their own, which may not work for you.

Toys for budgerigars are a little different from other fun items designed for larger birds, such as: nymphs, gray parrots, noble parrots, Amazons, macaws, Senegals.

Budgerigar Toys

Since the budgies themselves are very energetic and sociable, they appreciate the chaos in the understanding of the person and the fun in the understanding of the budgerigar. The more noise, din, chirping, strumming and ringing, the livelier and happier your tomboy becomes.

The normal state of the parrot’s abode is when everything staggers with a ringing and creaking, and the bird, dodging from the bells, jumps from the swing onto the stairs and down, then immediately, headlong, rushes under the roof of the cage, along the way touching the rattles. The same thing happens at the stand, and when you can still throw something down on the floor (shells, caps, balls, cubes) – this is generally the peak of fun.

Baby rattles are also good for the fun of our pets, and kinder boxes can be filled with grains, buttons and closed with small holes. The bird will see that there is something inside and will try to dig out the contents – an occupation not for one day.

All items that consist of wire can be decorated with beads and buttons, you just need to disassemble the simple design of the swing / bell and string jewelry. It is not necessary to seal the beads and buttons; the parrot should be able to drive them along the rods.

Toys for large parrots

Entertainment material for large parrots must be durable and environmentally friendly. Of course, this applies to all pets, but in this case, we are talking about the endurance of the material under the onslaught of the beak and claws of your pet.

You can also use thin twigs, but count on the fact that you should have a supply of such nibbles. Carried away Jaco instantly gnaw your design. Therefore, it is better to build large-sized chewing balls, and the bars for swings and rope labyrinths should be much thicker and rougher than for small parrots.

Large parrots are very fond of puzzles, for them you can make hanging beads with “boxes” that are hollow inside. You can hide dried berries, nuts or tidbits there, after showing the bird that there is something there.

They also like to build and sort pyramids, and from a bending rope you can make a new swing or some kind of obstacle for them once a week.

Parrot toys are not only a great way to entertain your bird while you are away, they are an important element in your pet’s physical and psychological development. Thanks to joint games, you can establish close contact with a parrot, make friends and tame a bird.

Educational toys are excellent companions for a parrot and are a kind of bridge between birds and their owners.
