October is the time to help!

On World Animal Day, we will remind you what to do if you find a homeless pet and want to help.

October 4 is World Animal Day. We at SharPei Online want this day not to be lost, but to draw as much attention as possible to the problem of homeless pets. Svetlana Safonova, director of the foundation, explained how the situation with homeless pets is now in our country and how each of us can help.

October is the time to help!

Day after day, volunteers, shelters and relief funds do a titanic job: they catch homeless animals, sterilize them, place them in a shelter or place them in families. However, people do not stop throwing out annoying dogs and cats. So there are still a lot of homeless pets on the streets.

: during this period, pets are thrown away especially often. Adult dogs and cats are “forgotten” at dachas, and boxes with puppies and kittens are brought to the shops again and again.

A line of abandoned pets can wrap around the globe.

We have long known the main reason why dogs and cats end up on the street is irresponsible breeding. And so I once again ask everyone whose pets are not involved in professional breeding: do not let go for a walk unattended, do not throw them out into the street.

And now I’ll tell you what to do if you meet a stray dog or cat on the street, but you can’t take it with you. But first, weigh your moral and material capabilities. Listen to yourself and give an answer: are you ready to save a pet without shifting the desire to help onto someone else’s shoulders?

I will warn you right away: it is unlikely that you will be able to limit yourself to one call to the shelter and take your pet there.

The shelters are always full. Funds, as a rule, do not have their own shelter. But the wards of both those and others have a lot. And the hands are sorely lacking. Most likely, you will have to attach a pet on your own. If that doesn’t scare you, we’re proud of you. And this guide is for you.

First of all, assess the condition of the animal. If he is trying to attack you, shaking and spitting, it is too dangerous to take him home. Facial signs of rabies. In this case, do not touch the animal and call the capture service. And our instruction is about pets without dangerous signs. These do not show aggression, they look at you shyly and look pathetic, not intimidating.

  1. . He needs a temporary home until you find permanent owners. Call all acquaintances, friends, relatives, neighbors. Perhaps one of them will agree to shelter the foundling. If not, consider paid overexposure.

  2. Contact your veterinarian to evaluate your pet’s condition. Maybe he needs emergency help.

  3. Wait one week for quarantine. During quarantine, a cat or dog may show signs of illness. Once warm, full, and safe, the body usually relaxes. This is where the disease manifests itself. In the first week, I do not recommend treating the foundling for worms and fleas. It is not known how the treatment will affect the weakened body. Regarding the treatment, it is safer to consult with a veterinarian.

  4. Try to find the previous owner. There is a possibility that the pet is lost. Post information to local groups. Post ads on poles. Examine the pet: suddenly he has a chip or brand.

  5. , prepare for vaccination, sterilization or castration – after quarantine. Discuss the sequence and time of procedures with your veterinarian.

  6. Start looking for a new owner if you can’t find the old one. Take good photos. Write a text with information about the age, character of the pet. Tell us how you found it and why you can’t keep it. Leave your contacts. Publish the post on your social networks, ask your friends to repost. Write to the administrators of animal protection groups with a request to place your ad on their site. The more people who see your message, the more likely it is that your pet will find a new home.

  7. If someone wants to help you save your pet – do not be lazy and chat with him. If there is a potential owner, ask him in detail why he wanted to shelter the foundling. Specify whether he had pets before, whether he is ready for responsibility. This is important so that the pet you rescued does not end up on the street again.

It will be great if you exchange contacts with the new owner and stay in touch: unobtrusively follow the life of the former homeless person and help if asked. After all, in a sense, a rescued pet is also your responsibility.
