Neutering and castration of dogs

Sterilization of dogs is the deprivation of the opportunity to have offspring. This term applies to both females and males.

Ways to sterilize dogs

Castration – removal of the gonads (ovaries in females and testes in males). This stops the production of sex hormones.Sterilization without removal of the gonads: in males – the intersection of the vas deferens, in females – removal of the uterus while maintaining the ovaries.Chemical sterilization. This method is still being developed and is not used in practice. Sterilization can be carried out in an “open” way, but now the laparoscopy method is increasingly being chosen. Castration of males takes 5 – 20 minutes, sterilization of bitches: 20 – 60 minutes.

Indications for sterilization of dogs

Indications for sterilization of bitches1. Unwillingness to receive offspring from this dog.2. Discomfort associated with estrus and the need to take measures to prevent unwanted pregnancy. 3. Medical indications:

  • inflammatory diseases of the reproductive organs
  • cysts or tumors of the ovaries
  • hyperplasia of the mammary glands
  • frequent false pregnancies irregular, prolonged or too bloody estrus
  • difficult childbirth.

If a bitch is spayed before the first estrus, then the risk of oncological diseases is reduced by 200 times. Spaying before the fourth estrus reduces the risk by 12 times. Subsequent sterilization does not affect the risk of developing oncology. Indications for sterilization of males

  1. Prostatitis.
  2. Genital trauma.
  3. Strong sexual desire.
  4. Correction of the psyche (although in this case the results are rather doubtful).

When is the best time to spay a dog?

In principle, surgical intervention is possible at any time, with the exception of summer days with air temperatures above 30 degrees – these are favorable conditions for the reproduction of bacteria. Therefore, in the heat, suppuration often occurs if the dog gnaws the seams or an infection gets into the wound. But the best time for sterilization is autumn. During estrus, sterilization is not carried out. At this time, the hormonal background of the dog is unstable, which is fraught with complications.
