Mistus striped

Mistus striped, scientific name Mystus vittatus, belongs to the family Bagridae (Orcas). It occurs naturally throughout South Asia in Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh. Inhabits both stagnant and flowing water bodies. It lives among coastal vegetation in swamps, lakes with heavily silted substrates.

Description

Adult individuals reach a length of up to 21 cm. Catfish has a slender body with a large head. Large eyes and several pairs of long sensitive antennae help to navigate and find food in muddy waters.

A characteristic feature of the species is a striped body pattern of 4–5 light horizontal lines.

Behavior and Compatibility

Adult Mistuses striped lead a solitary lifestyle. It does not apply to territorial species, therefore, in spacious aquariums it can be in the company of relatives. Compatible with many other fish of comparable size.

Due to their promiscuity for food, they can, on occasion, eat smaller neighbors in the aquarium.

Maintenance and care, arrangement of the aquarium

The optimal size of the aquarium for one or two catfish starts from 200-250 liters. In the design, it is recommended to combine areas of open water with places for shelters from snags and thickets of plants.

Unpretentious, perfectly adapts to various conditions, if they are in the acceptable range of hydrochemical parameters and temperatures. Prefers subdued lighting levels.

Aquarium maintenance is standard. The minimum list of mandatory procedures includes weekly replacement of part of the water with fresh water, removal of organic waste and equipment maintenance.

Food

Accepts most popular feeds in both live, frozen and dry form.
