Mexican hornwort
Mexican hornwort, scientific name Ceratophyllum demersum “Mexiko”. As the name suggests, this plant is native to Mexico. It is considered endemic to Lake Catemaco, located in the southern state of Veracruz. It grows in the coastal zone, forming dense clusters.
Outwardly, it differs significantly from the classic dark green Hornwort. The stem is dark brown-red. Lateral shoots grow in pairs, while the common forms produce only one shoot per node. Needle-shaped leaves, whorled, each plate is bifurcated, the color is dark green. It mainly floats on the surface, but can also anchor on the bottom. The roots are rather weak and easily break out of the ground.
Mexican hornwort has the same set of qualities as related species. It is unpretentious, perfectly adapts to a wide range of hydrochemical values and illumination. Does not require special feeding. It grows quickly, and its thickets will become a reliable protection for fish fry.
