Ideal pets: dogs that hardly shed or smell

The desire to get a dog often fades at the thought of domestic problems. But even with increased sensitivity and accuracy, you can get a pet that will not cause discomfort. This article is about which dogs do not shed and do not smell.

Who are these dogs for?

Before choosing a pet, it is better to determine which criteria are mandatory. If the owners first of all need a strict guard or an affectionate companion for children, it is important not to get hung up on the “fur” and “fragrant” features of the pet. But here are the cases in which it is definitely worth paying attention to non-shedding dog breeds:

• intolerance for disorder

If the owner has neither the time nor the desire to collect fur scraps from furniture and clothes, the dog will become a burden during the molting period. It is better not to bring yourself and the animal to stressful situations, but to choose from those who shed less.

• acute sense of smell

Dog hair is fraught with another threat – an unpleasant odor accumulates in it. It is especially noticeable in dogs with an undercoat that is saturated with sebum and begins to “smell”.

• Allergy

Pets that do not shed cannot be considered completely hypoallergenic. The fact is that an allergy to dogs is not a reaction of the body to the fur of an animal, but to certain proteins that are contained in saliva and in the secrets of the skin glands of an animal. But the absence of shedding still reduces the risks, since the fallen hairs with dead skin flakes do not accumulate on the surfaces.

Please note: the key to success in the fight against allergies is not the breed of the pet, but the attentiveness and accuracy of the owner. Wash your hands immediately after petting your dog, and dry and wet surfaces regularly. 

Shedding breeds of dogs without smell

It will not be possible to completely avoid the hassle with any pet – breeds of dogs that do not shed and do not smell still require careful care. But you can reduce the risk of allergies and reduce the amount of daily cleaning by choosing one of the following breeds:

• American Hairless Terrier

Friendly and affectionate representatives of the hairless breed are great for home keeping. They simply have nothing to shed, but their sensitive skin requires attention. In winter, the terrier will need warm clothes, and in the summer – special sunscreen.

• Afghan hound

Surprisingly, the luxurious wool of the Afghans practically does not shed. But you will have to wash and comb out such dogs at least twice a week – and do not forget about long walks and physical activity.

• Bichon frize

Owners of playful and friendly Bichons definitely have a large fur ball – but this is the dog itself, and not its fallen hair. Representatives of this breed will need regular haircuts and daily combing.

• Chinese Crested

Tufts of long hair can only be seen on the head, legs and tail of the Chinese Crested, and their torso is completely naked. This “toy” breed is a great choice for lovers of tiny dogs.

• Maltese

Allergy rarely occurs on the long and silky coat of lapdogs, but the pet will need to be bathed and combed out constantly. And also cut it – otherwise the Maltese will quickly turn into Rapunzel.

• Poodle

The curly and soft coat of the poodle does not shed and has no smell. If you decide to get such a smart and affectionate dog, do not forget to decide on the size: according to this criterion, poodles are divided into four types.

• havanese bichon

Playful “Cubans” will require careful care for long flowing hair. At the same time, you should not be afraid of smells and active molting – representatives of this breed do not have an undercoat.

• Yorkshire Terrier

Another breed that practically does not shed and does not have an unpleasant smell due to the lack of an undercoat. For the same reason, Yorkies need to be kept warm – for example, dressing up in overalls at any hint of coolness.
