Hygrophylla siamskaya

Hygrophila Siamese, scientific name Hygrophila corymbosa “Siamensis”. It is a variety of the variable species Hygrophila corymbose. It is found everywhere throughout Southeast Asia, growing along the banks of reservoirs, as well as under water during the rainy season. It has been used as an aquarium plant for many decades. It is valued in professional aquascaping because of the ability to control the growth rate and shape of the bush.

Due to its unpretentiousness, Hygrophila Siamese can be used in most freshwater aquariums, except for very small tanks and in dimly lit conditions. In addition, this variety of Hygrophila grows well in a wide range of water hardness levels and temperatures. Special fertilizers are not required, the organic matter that will naturally occur as a result of the vital activity of fish is enough. However, it is worth noting that with a lack of iron and bright light, the plant will turn yellow, growth problems may arise – it will begin to stretch, but not gain plant mass. High levels of iron will give the leaves a bronze hue, with moderate amounts of nutrients, the plant will remain just green.

Hygrophila Siamese is suitable for planting in the center or in the background near the back wall. After pruning, it quickly produces side shoots that take root near the mother plant. It looks good in biotope aquariums reproducing parts of the reservoirs of Southeast Asia, for example, in combination with Cryptocorynes surrounded by flocks of miniature cyprinids such as Rasboras, Danios, Barbs and others.
