How to understand that a dog is crying, and what you need to know about dog tears
Dogs have been kept as pets for many years. The owners are used to the fact that a four-legged friend expresses his emotions with the help of a tail, ears and even paws – jumps and plays for joy, tucks his tail and ears out of fear or shame. But how does a dog feel sad? Can she worry and cry in the same way as a person?
Emotions in a dog
A pet can experience a fairly wide range of emotions: joy, sadness, resentment, regret, and so on. The dog can also be bored, angry, ashamed and jealous. Often, animals also show empathy – if the owner is upset about something, the pet will do its best to cheer him up and help get rid of a bad mood. But can dogs cry?
All dogs have lacrimal glands, but their tears are mainly designed to cleanse the eyes of pollution and moisturize the cornea. But at the same time, dogs do not know how to cry like people. They express pain and resentment in other ways.
Expressing emotions
Four-legged pets can express emotions in completely different ways. Shy animals will rejoice or get angry very quietly, but energetic and friendly pets will show their mood with all their might.
● Rejoicing, the dog wags its tail, spins around its axis, tries to climb onto its arms, jumps and runs.
● If the dog is upset about something, he will rather turn away, but still will not cry from emotion.
● If the pet is angry, it will flatten its ears, grin and even growl.
● A bored pet will rush to the owner as soon as he enters the apartment. A four-legged friend will ask to stroke him, scratch his tummy and will express happiness with all his might. And even, probably, will bring his favorite toy.
● Feeling jealous, especially when there are several dogs in the house, the pet may become angry and seek attention.
Dog’s tears
If it seems that the dog is crying, you should definitely seek the advice of a veterinarian. Increased tearing can indicate various diseases in the animal, and some of them are quite serious.
The first and main reason that a dog cries is a foreign object (a blade of grass, a grain of sand, etc.) getting into the eye or an allergic reaction. Detergents and chemicals, houseplants, pollen from trees or shrubs blooming on the street or on the territory of the house can become an allergen, food allergies are also possible.
Some breeds are initially predisposed to profuse lacrimation due to the structure of the muzzle – these are pugs, bulldogs, Pekingese.
Too much tearing can also indicate inflammation of the eyeball, eyelid or cornea. It is best not to take any therapeutic measures on your own.
If the allergy is ruled out, there is no damage in the dog’s eyes, but the tears still constantly flow, you should immediately contact the nearest veterinary clinic. The specialist will perform a visual examination, prescribe an examination and specialized treatment. He will probably also give advice on diet changes and home care for the dog’s eyes. It is imperative to adhere to all appointments and not neglect the recommendations of a specialist.
The eyes are a very important organ that helps the pet navigate in space, and loss of vision will seriously reduce the quality of life of the animal. You should not treat yourself, because the health of the dog is an important component of its full and joyful life in the house.
