How to teach a puppy to a diaper?
A puppy in the house is a great joy and a lot of organizational issues. Where will the pet sleep, what will he eat, what will he play, where will he go to the toilet? We will figure out how to teach a small puppy to a diaper and what difficulties you may encounter in the educational process.
By the time you arrive at your little one’s home, you should already have a supply of special puppy pads, disposable or reusable, on hand. They can be purchased at the pet store. But all carpets, paths, rugs, rags from the floor must be removed in a timely manner, otherwise the puppy will get confused and take your favorite carpet in the living room for a diaper.
When you first brought the puppy into the house, immediately put him on a diaper. Most likely, he will try to run away from the diaper. Bring the fugitive back to the diaper, show him a treat. But do not give a treat until the newcomer goes to the toilet for a diaper. The treat in your hands will attract the attention of the pet, he will concentrate and do his business in a specially prepared place. After that, give a treat, say words of praise and pet the puppy. So you start the association in the pet’s mind “if you carefully go to the diaper, I will be rewarded in the form of a treat and the owner’s approval.”
Some dog breeders are of the opinion that diapers should be placed in doorways between living spaces in the house, along the path of a pet exploring the house and the world around. Moving from room to room, the puppy will definitely see the diapers. And be sure to place on the diaper at the couch and not far from the place of eating. There is another method. Track where the pet went to the toilet. Blot the puddle with a clean diaper and put it in place immediately after cleaning. The smell on the diaper will help the puppy to orientate: this is the signal “The toilet is here.”
If next time you find a surprise from a pet in a different place, repeat the procedure. At some point, a noticeable part of the space in the house will be covered with puppy diapers.
If several small pets live in your house, fasten two diapers with tape so that two or three puppies can sit on the sanitary island at once. Clean up excrement immediately, and a diaper with one tiny puddle does not need to be replaced immediately. Lightly blot the used diaper with a clean diaper so that pets continue to successfully find places to go to the toilet by smell.
Watch your four-legged friend. With any approach, sooner or later it turns out that your ward has a certain favorite area for going to the toilet. Then you can gradually reduce the number of diapers and eventually leave them only in your pet’s favorite toilet nook. When the diaper is left alone, lay it on top of the tray, let the four-legged friend gradually come to the idea that it is time to change the diaper to the tray, but do not immediately deprive him of the opportunity to do things for the diaper.
No matter how logically the instructions on how to properly accustom a puppy to a diaper are drawn up, you should always keep in mind that each pet is individual. The educational process, to a greater or lesser extent, will be accompanied by the disobedience of the little tomboy and unintentional violations of the rules by the pet. Often pets are accepted to gnaw and gut disposable diapers. In this case, it is better to switch to reusable ones.
You can start as early as one month. But keep in mind that until about three months of age, the pet can hardly control his trips to the toilet. Never scold your pet for puddles in the wrong place. Puppies do not do anything out of spite: they only learn the right behavior.
Let your pet know what behavior he will be praised and rewarded for. I went to the diaper – we praise, stroke, give a treat, emotionally say “Well done, excellent, good girl!” The puppy will not understand the words, but will feel approval and positive emotions. Did the job on the floor – strictly and restrainedly we emphasize with words that you do not like it. We put the puppy on a diaper, for some time we give the pet to think about his behavior, without treats, games and praise.
The pet will quickly feel the connection between his behavior and your reaction. While you are accustoming a puppy to a diaper, stop learning commands so that he associates a treat with only the right trips to the toilet.
In small puppies, the bladder fills up very quickly. At one month, the puppy needs to walk a little every 45 minutes, at four to five months – every two hours. So be on the lookout. If the pet began to spin, sniffing the corners, it is very possible that it is time to take him to the diaper as soon as possible. Usually, pets need to go to the toilet after sleeping, eating, or active play. For the first time, it is better to exclude games on the bed, sofa or other upholstered furniture.
But what if you don’t want to accustom a puppy to going to the toilet on a diaper from scratch? There is an exit. Look for a grown up baby three to four months old, already accustomed to a diaper, from a breeder. If you live in a country house and it’s easier for you to take a puppy outside than to spread diapers all over your home, look for a pet from a breeder who lived with his brothers, sisters and mother dog on the street from early childhood, for example, in an aviary. Such a puppy is much more accustomed to doing his business on the street.
A puppy can go on a diaper for up to six to seven months, sometimes a little longer, especially if you do not go out for a walk with your ward very often. If your pet is a Spitz, a lapdog, a Russian Toy, a Chihuahua, or a representative of another breed that does not need long active walks, you can transfer your four-legged friend from diapers to the tray on an ongoing basis. If you are not at home for a long time, the dog simply goes to the toilet in the tray.
Before going for a walk, make sure that your miniature puppy goes to the toilet. This is necessary so that going outside is not associated solely with the need to sit down under a bush in the fresh air. In the future, your lap dog or Pekingese will calmly go to the toilet and in the tray, and on the street.
If you have a puppy of a medium or large breed, for example, a poodle, a Labrador, a Rottweiler, gradually wean him from diapers and teach him to wait for a walk from about four months old. But don’t go home as soon as the dog does his business. Then the pet will be cunning and endure to the last, in order to take a longer walk.
First, you can spread a diaper on the street so that the puppy sees a familiar object and understands that here it is, a sanitary island, you can go to the toilet here, outside the apartment. If the dog is already more than six months old, but she continues to walk exclusively on a diaper, contact a zoopsychologist. And at the same time to the veterinarian to make sure that your pet is healthy and it’s just a matter of correcting behavior.
To accustom a puppy to a diaper, you first of all need patience. It happens that at five or six months before, a neat puppy suddenly starts going to the toilet past the diaper. We calmly teach him again, attract attention with a treat, give a tasty reward after the right trip to the toilet.
A young dog may accidentally go to the toilet in the wrong place due to stress or for some other reason: for example, because he was afraid of a thunderstorm or the sound of a drill. Do not scold your pet, mistakes are normal, and the path to ideal behavior is long and thorny.
We wish you and your pets patience and understanding!
