How to tame a puppy?

Main rules

Puppies are not clockwork toys that follow commands on demand. They are like children: they also need a clear explanation and repeated repetitions, they do not accept cruelty and are often mistaken. Before bringing a pet into your home, make sure you:

  • Have sufficient patience;

  • Not limited in time for full communication with the puppy;

  • Ready to persevere and not give up;

  • You will be affectionate, caring and surround him with your love, even if he does not immediately understand what you want from him.

Taming a puppy should take place without a whip. Unlike children, dogs often do not understand why they are beaten and why they are shouted at. Assimilation of new material for them occurs with the help of repeated repetitions, bringing commands to the level of a reflex, and not through awareness of the need to obey or behave well (“good” only by human standards).

The process of domestication

The process of domestication consists of the correct establishment of contact with the puppy and simple rules that the owner must explain to him. The degree of complexity of this process depends entirely on the nature of the baby, the obstinacy and ingenuity of his breed. The main condition for successful upbringing (this applies to absolutely all dogs) is to start the process of taming from the first days the baby appears in the house. Of course, if it is not younger than 2 months.

Teaching a puppy to a nickname

To do this, you need to talk to the dog, each time calling it by name. During the pronunciation of the nickname, the intonation should be joyful, as dogs are susceptible to voice changes. It is also important to look your pet in the eyes so that he begins to associate himself with his nickname. The result will not be visible immediately (it may take a month), but over time the puppy will get used to his name.

“No” command

It is important from childhood to teach the dog on command to stop behaving in an undesirable way. To do this, in no case should you beat her or shout at her. Also, do not rudely call a pet by name: it should not cause negative emotions. In a sufficiently formidable voice, say the command “no” or “fu” several times. Over time, the puppy will understand how not to behave.

For example, if the puppy chews on furniture or slippers, tell him strictly “no” and take this item away or take the puppy to another place. In return, give him a toy and spend some time playing. This behavior of a pet can be associated with both a change of teeth and a banal lack of attention.

Attitude towards food

In the process of taming a dog, it is very important not to feed him food from your table and not let him eat anything that has fallen on the floor. Dogs can be harmed by human food. Modern feeds are optimally suited for pets. The puppy must understand that he can only eat from his own bowl and only from the hands of the owner and other family members. This will teach him not to take treats from strangers on the street, not to pick up things that are lying on the ground and can be dangerous.

Walking

When the puppy begins to go outside on a leash, it is important to teach him to calmly walk beside him. To do this, he needs to be pulled back (but not aggressively) when he runs forward or stops. In this case, you need to repeat the command “next”.

If you doubt that you can train a puppy patiently, without aggression, we advise you to work on yourself before getting a pet, or consider purchasing an adult well-mannered dog.
