How to stop a parrot from biting?

In a previous article, we talked about And today we will try to figure out how to wean him from an annoying habit.

  • To wean a parrot from biting, it is important to determine the reason for this behavior. The nature of further actions depends on the reason.

  • If the bites are temporary (for example, the pet bites during a period of severe stress, molting or illness), it is better to just wait and try not to disturb the parrot.

  • Give your parrot special toys that he can peck at. Give him attention more often, let him fly out of the cage, diversify his leisure time. Many parrots bite simply out of boredom or out of resentment at an eternally busy owner.

  • Switch the attention of the parrot. So, you understand that your pet is a lover of biting. Now try to avoid situations where he can work out his skill. Distract the attention of the parrot when you feel that he is ready to bite you. If you succeed in this, very soon the parrot will forget about his “hobby”.

  • If your parrot bites in an attempt to defend its territory, make sure that your family members do not put their hands in the cage. And of course, don’t push yourself. It is better to fill the feeder, drinker and tidy up the cage while the parrot flies around the apartment. But don’t forget to follow him!

  • Don’t yell at the parrot. And not because it’s cruel. But because parrots generally have a positive attitude towards loud sounds and can interpret your cry as a call to action. Thus, many owners themselves encourage the aggressive behavior of the pet, although they are not aware of it.

How to stop a parrot from biting?
  • If possible, calmly react to the bite and gently remove your hand from the bird.

  • Teach your pet to the “No!” command. This is the best way to stop your parrot from biting. As soon as he bites you, strictly give the command and drive him away from you. From the first time, the parrot, of course, is unlikely to learn the lesson, but 3-4 repetitions will already give results. This skill will be useful to you in further education.

  • Do not use physical force. Any rudeness towards the parrot will cause him stress, and stress has never accompanied good behavior. In addition, the parrot is easy to injure, because they are very fragile animals. The maximum that is permissible is to lightly click the parrot on the beak at the time of the bite. But be careful: this technique only works with parrots that bite out of harm or because they played too much. Such a gesture will only provoke pugnacious birds, and if the parrot is stressed or if it protects the territory, in this way you will only aggravate the situation and ruin the relationship between you.

Even if your pet makes you very upset from time to time, remember that you are on the same team. Often we do not see the reasons that force our pets to behave badly, but they always exist. Try to better understand your pet and find the right approach to it.
