How to remove the smell of a cat in the house?

Dealing with a pet that ignores the tray is not easy. Attracted by his own marks, he will do it again and again. Therefore, if you feel an unpleasant odor, you need to start acting as soon as possible.

Why is there an odor?

The main components of cat urine, in addition to sulfates and phosphates, are urea, urochrome, which gives it a yellow color, uric acid and its salts. The first two substances are perfectly soluble in water, but uric acid and its salts are insoluble in water. At the same time, it is they who absorb ammonia and thiol, as a result of which a familiar smell is obtained.

Removing the stain and smell of cat urine is actually not that difficult. It is important to understand that a lot depends on the “freshness” and the surface on which it remains. So, the fresher the stain, the easier it is to remove. At the same time, it is much more difficult to remove it from porous surfaces, for example, from fabric, wood or pile, than from tiles or linoleum.

Washing the stain with water is not recommended: in this way it will not be possible to remove uric acid and odor, but you can grind the stain and increase its area.

In addition, you should not use products with ammonia and chlorine at the same time! In general, mixing different cleaners is highly undesirable. Having entered into a chemical reaction, they can cause irreparable harm to the health of households.

All manipulations and cleaning operations using chemicals must be carried out strictly with gloves and a mask.

How to deal?

  1. As an adsorbent, cat litter, a baby diaper, paper towels, and even flour are suitable. Put it on the stain, and after the liquid is completely absorbed, place the adsorbent in the cat’s tray. You can remove the remaining stain on the floor with a solution of vinegar and soda.

  2. It is necessary to make a solution of vinegar 1: 3 and pour it on the stain. If furniture is damaged, you can pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it on this place.

  3. Pour ordinary baking soda onto the resulting stain of the acetic solution and pour it with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. As a result, a foam is formed, which will soon be absorbed and settle.

  4. Remaining foam can be removed by spraying the stain with a citrus air freshener or a solution with lemon, orange or grapefruit essential oil.

You can also fight stains with a solution of citric acid or potassium permanganate.

Pet stores now offer a variety of products to combat bad pet habits, including adsorbent solutions and special liquids for cleaning up cat stains.

Reasons for unwanted behavior

It is important to understand that the main difficulty lies not in how to remove the smell of a cat in the house, but in the reasons for this behavior of the pet. If you are just litter box training, try to be as patient as possible, use positive reinforcement: as soon as the pet goes to the litter box, praise him, pet him and reward him with treats.

If the cat marks furniture and wallpaper, the period of sexual hunting has probably begun. At this time, other changes in the behavior of pets are usually observed: cats become more aggressive, may meow for a long time and even attempt to escape from the house. If the cat does not belong to the breed class and you do not plan to mate, it makes sense to think about castration of the pet.
