Which is better: leave the dog at home or take it home to other people?

The dog is attached to the owner, that is, for her, not a house, but a person is a security base. So, if you ask someone you know to visit your pet only a couple of times a day to feed and walk, and the rest of the time the dog will be alone, this may turn out to be too much stress, which it will be extremely difficult for the animal to cope with.

It is possible to leave a dog at home if you ask one of your relatives or friends to live with him during your absence. Even better, if the dog knows this person, and she treats him well. This is the most painless option for the dog.

If this is not possible, then it is better to choose overexposure, and not leave the dog alone at home. Overexposure can be of several types:

• Relatives or friends agree to adopt your four-legged friend at home.
• Home overexposure – the dog lives with a person who provides animal care services during the absence of the owners.
• Hotels for animals. However, in this case, there is a risk that the dog will spend most of the time alone.

Sometimes the instructor you train with agrees to take the dog in. If the dog loves him, this can be a great solution.

Of course, overexposure, especially to strangers, will in any case be more or less stressful for each dog. However, there are dogs for which overexposure will bring more harm and come back to haunt more than once over time.

If you have a puppy under the age of 6 months, it is highly undesirable to leave him for overexposure. This is the period when the puppy forms an attitude to the world and a relationship with you. And separation at this time is fraught with serious risk.

An adult dog that has recently entered your home is another vulnerable category. If the attachment did not have time to form, and you leave the pet with other people, and even for a long time, then after your arrival you will have to start re-establishing relationships, and, perhaps, not even from a zero point, but from a “minus” position.

Therefore, if a vacation is planned in the next six months, it is better not to take a puppy or an adult dog into the house. Or, if you already have a pet and you can’t take it with you, you should abandon the trip and stay at home – the dog’s psyche is more expensive.

How to make it easier for your dog to stay in overexposure

As already mentioned, overexposure is stressful for any dog. But you can make life easier for your pet if the routine and habitual way of things change as little as possible.

Talk to the caregivers about the feeding and walking schedule – this will help keep the dog’s daily routine, which means it will provide at least some predictability and help your pet cope with stress.

Tell us what rules the life of a dog in your house obeys – what it can and cannot do. Dogs value consistency, and this will give the animal the opportunity to live more or less calmly, and not walk through a minefield, feeling for the boundaries of what is permitted.

What else should be discussed before leaving the dog for overexposure

It is important to introduce the dog in advance to the person with whom it will live. It’s good if you can go on one (or rather several) joint walks and see how a person treats a dog. If possible, take your pet to visit the place where you plan to leave the dog.

Even if you walk your dog off-leash, it is extremely important to stipulate that the walk will take place exclusively on a leash. A dog is not always ready to follow a stranger, no matter how educated and trained it may be. If you are not sure that this rule will be respected, it is better to look for another overexposure.

Prepare important things in the form of a reminder: when and what to feed the dog, what time to walk, what rules to follow.

If the dog has had behavioral problems, stress can trigger them again. And it will be fair both in relation to the dog and in relation to people who agree to take it for overexposure, warn about such a possibility and give appropriate recommendations.
