How to help a dog in the heat
How to save a dog from overheating and give her a carefree summer, veterinarian Irina Buival puts it on the shelves.
- Choose the right time to walk
Walk your dog in the morning or evening. While it’s cool outside, you can play active games, work out commands and get the most out of your walk.
- Avoid direct sunlight
For walks, choose parks, courtyards and squares with a saving shadow.
- Adjust the intensity of the load
Your pet is not Rocky or Terminator, and it does not have to work hard at all. If it’s hot outside, and the dog is tired and suffering from stuffiness, do not force him to conquer obstacles. It is better to take in the shade and drink water.
- Provide access to drinking water
At home, the pet should always have access to fresh drinking water. But in the summer, water and a compact bowl for it should also be taken with you for walks. As soon as you see that the dog is hot, give him a drink.
- Follow the right diet
The quality of feeding leaves its mark on many things. Even how the dog endures the heat. Do not overfeed your pet and do not give him fatty foods. To cope with such a diet, the body spends a huge amount of energy, and the dog becomes lethargic. Accordingly, it is more difficult for her to endure the heat.
- No stuffy spaces
If your apartment is very hot, and open windows do not help, it’s time to think about air conditioning. While you are working in a cool office, the pet is sitting at home in stuffiness, and this is another test!
- Cool with water
To cool your dog a little in the heat, wet his paws, tummy and neck with cool water. But the head must remain intact, otherwise you can provoke a sunstroke.
- Protect skin and coat from UV rays and dryness
Dogs have sensitive skin. Therefore, even in extreme heat, cutting pets with medium and long hair is not recommended. The shorter the coat, the higher the chance of sunburn.
To protect the skin and coat from dryness and fading, wash your dog in the summer with special protective products (for example, shampoos and conditioners from the ISB Black Passion line). On the skin of hairless dogs, be sure to apply a protective cream with UV filters before walking. These actions will help protect your pet from the harmful effects of sunlight and maintain the health and beauty of the skin and coat.
- Get out into nature
Trips to nature with walks and bathing are the dream of many dogs. The more often you take your pet away from the bustle of the city, the happier he will be. But don’t forget the safety rules! Be sure to vaccinate your pet and treat it for parasites.
- Don’t leave your dog in the car
Even if you only need to be away for “5 minutes”, don’t leave your dog alone in the car. In the heat, the car warms up very quickly, and the dog may become ill. Overheating with accompanying symptoms in the form of vomiting, etc., has not yet benefited anyone. By the way, in some countries, passers-by have the right to break the glass of a car if a dog is locked in it. There is something to think about here!
Take care of your pets and have a nice summer!
