How to feed a chinchilla?

Chinchillas are rodents with sensitive digestion. The wrong diet will quickly lead to weight gain and serious problems with the gastrointestinal tract. When starting a chinchilla, you must clearly understand how and what you will feed it. Our 5 main principles will help you!

1. Chinchillas are herbivorous rodents, and the basis of their diet should be refined hay and greens, not grains. Pet stores offer a wide range of grain mixtures, so it is very important not to make a mistake and choose a basic diet that is not designed for all rodents, but specifically for chinchillas (for example, Micropills Fiory). Grain mixtures are also recommended, but only as a supplement to the diet, in strictly limited quantities.

2. Contaminated, stale and “slightly” moldy grains, hay and greens must not be used for feeding in any case! Otherwise, gastrointestinal diseases for your pet are provided, and with them possible poisoning and death.

3. Give preference to super premium diets. For their production, the highest quality, selected raw materials are used. You can be sure that your little one is getting all the vitamins they need and that the product is really safe.

4. Better to underfeed than overfeed. We forget grandmother’s instructions and always focus on the rate indicated on the packaging of the selected diet. Chinchillas are prone to gaining excess weight, and it provokes serious health problems. Be vigilant and do not put your pet’s quality of life at risk.

5. Do not feed the rodent food from the human table. Even if your dinner seems very tasty and healthy to you, it will not suit your chinchilla. Sweet, sour or spicy, boiled, fried, seasoned, baked, etc. even in small amounts can cost your pet health and even life.

At first glance, the general principles are clear and do not carry a new message. However, in practice, novice owners, due to inexperience, do not comply with them, and the consequences are sad.

Be careful and take care of the health of your pets. They trust you!
