How to distribute kittens

Your cat has brought offspring that you did not plan. If you can’t keep the kittens, consider finding new homes for them. It is important here that all parties are satisfied, and the kids are in caring hands.

When can kittens be distributed

Not everyone knows at what age to distribute kittens. Wait until the pets are 2,5–3 months old. The cat will be able to more easily endure separation from the cubs, and you will have time to prepare the kittens for an independent life without a mother. Despite the fact that the cat stops feeding them milk by 8-10 weeks, she should have time to give them the initial socialization. The babies who receive it will be more sociable, friendly, inquisitive and adapted to the world around them. Early weaning is fraught with aggressive behavior of the kitten towards new owners. A late transfer may cause him fear of a new home. It is best to start weaning a kitten from mother’s milk at 4 weeks and take him away from the cat for a couple of hours during the same period. By three months, sometimes a little earlier, the kitten should be fully accustomed to the tray and self-feeding. He should be introduced to the smell of the future owner (the item of his clothing) and the new home (litter) in advance, so that after the move he feels completely safe.

Of the most optimal ways to adopt kittens, you can choose three: by acquaintance, by an ad on the Internet and through shelters.

  • Start with the simplest: offer a kitten to relatives, friends, acquaintances or colleagues. Perhaps someone is just dreaming of a little furry friend. If there are a lot of kittens, then you will have to double your efforts to find new owners.

  • It is worth trying to look for a new home for the baby through ads on thematic forums or using a post on social networks. Start with your Facebook, VK or Instagram page. Post a couple of touching photos of a small pet. Ask your friends to share your post on their page. When responses come in, first talk to the potential owner, find out about the living conditions for the baby. Feel free to make arrangements to visit the kitten for the first month or two while he gets used to the new place.
  • Still it is possible to try to attach kittens through shelters. This is not easy, as they are usually overcrowded with adult animals and the conditions there are usually far from domestic. But in the absence of alternatives, the shelter will be safer than the street.

If you find homeless kittens

There are situations when it is simply impossible to pass by a homeless kitten, who for some reason was left alone on the street. If you are in doubt about his health, take him to the vet to check for infections, fleas, lichen, etc. At home, it is better to fence off a corner for him for a while and isolate him from other animals and family members. When the baby gets stronger, you can begin to deal with its attachment. As an option – give the kitten for overexposure. But usually you have to pay for it, so it’s better to immediately look for a permanent owner.

If you often have to give away kittens

It takes a lot of time and effort to adopt kittens. Think about spaying your cat, which will not only save her from the birth of unplanned offspring, but also save your nerves.
