How to choose a turtle aquarium

You decide to have one or more aquatic turtles and choose an aquaterrarium for them. A wide range of pet stores can confuse anyone, even an experienced reptile breeder, not to mention those who have turtles for the first time. How not to get lost in the variety of models and choose the right size aquaterrarium? Or maybe the turtle will feel good in an aquarium with fish and it is not necessary to buy a new one?

  • Better spacious than cramped.

An aquaterrarium is never too big, but often too small. Do not purchase compact models in order to save money, because we are talking about the quality of life of your pet.

  • A large amount of water is the key to success.

A significant volume of water contributes to the formation of a favorable habitat for the turtle, but water should not occupy the entire volume of the aquaterrarium.

  • Calculate the size.

– The length of the aquaterrarium must exceed the length of the turtle shell by at least 5 times. The calculation is valid for keeping one turtle.

– The width of the aquaterrarium should be at least 3 times the length of the tortoise shell. The calculation is valid for keeping one turtle.

– When keeping several turtles, 10-20% for each next pet is added to the calculation of the size of the aquaterrarium for one (largest) turtle.

  • Adjust the water level.

– The water level in the aquarium depends on the type of turtle.

– For actively swimming turtles, the depth of the water should be at least 2 times the length of the shell.

  • Get a separate aquaterrarium for turtles.

Do not put the turtle in an aquarium with fish. Otherwise, in the near future, the fish will not remain there, the turtle will simply eat them.

  • Choose an aquarium and equipment based on the characteristics of a particular species.

  • Equip the hulk.

90% of all species of domesticated water turtles in an aquarium should have dry land. The land is a spacious island on which a turtle of any size must fit completely and be able to dry out.

  • Remember the substrate.

Be sure to install the aquaterrarium on a special substrate that smooths out irregularities and reduces the load on the glass. This will save you from losing your expensive aquarium. If it stands on a hard surface, there is a very high risk that the glass walls of the aquarium may crack or burst.
