How do dogs apologize?

Sometimes owners ask: how to see that the dog understands the owner’s displeasure and “apologizes”? How do dogs apologize?

Every dog behaves “badly” sometimes. Not because she is “harmful” or “vindictive”, but because she may not have learned how to behave correctly yet (or you accidentally taught her how to behave incorrectly). And, of course, the owners in such cases express dissatisfaction. It is very important that the dog understands your reaction correctly and that you “read” his response correctly.

As a rule, if the owner shows displeasure, the dog can react in different ways:

  1. In response to your abuse, the dog starts jumping around, wags its tail, “smiles”, puts its ears up. This means that she simply does not understand that you are not very happy with her behavior. Perhaps you should be more strict at this point.
  2. The dog lowers its head a little, presses its ears, turns sideways, lowers its tail (but does not tighten!) This means that it was not afraid, but understood that you were unhappy. It is this reaction that means that the dog is, as it were, “apologising.”
  3. The dog tucks its tail, falls to the floor, tries to hide, or even lets a puddle under itself. Any of these signs means that you just went too far and scared the dog by applying too much punishment for him (even if by your standards it is not excessive). Do not repeat such a mistake in the future, express your dissatisfaction with the pet more gently.
