How and what to feed guppies. Guide from the candidate of veterinary sciences
How to properly feed the top fish, we learned from an expert in the aquarium trade.
Guppy is the most famous aquarium fish that is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. She is small, rather unpretentious and has a magnificent bright tail. In the aquarium, the guppy is kept in sight and always attracts attention.
Even a novice aquarist can handle breeding guppies: they are viviparous fish that do not require specific conditions of detention. Usually the aquarium is full of babies, which gives a special joy to the aquarist.
Still, questions arise: what kind of food is suitable for both adults and small guppies? And how to feed these wonderful fish so that they develop harmoniously and their color is bright?
The main food for guppies in the wild is mosquito larvae. Therefore, we can say that guppies are predators. Their diet should be dominated by animal products.
If you pay attention to the behavior of guppies, you will notice that they are not shy and spend most of their time at the surface of the water. In nature, it is there that mosquito larvae live – their main food. Therefore, food in tablets for bottom fish will not suit them: guppies simply will not get to it.
For guppies, food that stays on the water for a long time, and does not sink to the bottom of the aquarium, is ideal.
Guppy fry need nutritious food to ensure their active growth. At the same time, it should be small enough so that the kids can swallow it without problems. But this does not mean that fry and adult fish need different foods. Not at all.
Tetra Guppy’s special line of food is suitable for guppies of all ages. This food is in the form of small light flakes that stay on the water for a long time so that all the fish in the aquarium have time to eat them. The size of the flakes is chosen in such a way that both adults and kids can eat them. The food contains high quality animal products, ensures healthy growth of fry and maintains the health of adult fish. And this food also improves the color. How – I’ll tell you later.
The natural color of guppies is rather plain – such fish would hardly win the hearts of aquarists all over the world. But breeders have bred many beautiful breeds with a bright body color and fins. There is only one problem: with improper nutrition, the color fades. Therefore, it is important to choose foods that will maintain bright colors and provide a healthy shine to the fish.
To choose a food that improves the color of guppies, look at the composition. It should contain carotenoids. These are natural pigments that are completely safe for the body. They enhance the color of your fish and provide a healthy look and shine to the skin.
Tetra Guppy food is liked by the fish, and they eat it “with a bang”, and then they wait for the next feeding. Therefore, it is important to remember the main rule of feeding fish – they must not be overfed!
It is enough to feed guppies 1-2 times a day.
Portions should be calculated so that there is enough food for all the fish and that it is eaten in two to three minutes. Uneaten food must be disposed of. Otherwise, it will clog into the ground and into the filter sponges, the water will become cloudy and deteriorate.
Observe the feeding rate and always remove leftover food in time. Then the fish will be full, and the water in the aquarium will be crystal clear.
