Guinea pig walks around the apartment

Despite the clumsy physique, guinea pigs are very agile animals, they move dexterously and quickly, they can run after each other and arrange obstacle races, they should not be deprived of the opportunity to frolic, so walking around the room is very good for the health of pigs

The most important requirement when organizing a “foray” of a guinea pig into the Big World is control on your part. Please try not to let the pig out of sight so that it does not do things and is not lost.

Recommendations for organizing space for walking a guinea pig in a room:

  • In the room where guinea pigs walk, there should not be expensive carpets and furniture, otherwise the animals can spoil any items.
  • Electrical wiring must be inaccessible to guinea pigs, otherwise the animals may begin to gnaw it, which is deadly for them.
  • Place a flat bowl with a bedding in the room as a dressing nook.
  • Do not leave newspapers and books scattered around the room – guinea pigs love to fiddle with paper. Wallpaper can also become the object of their attention.
  • Provide animals with variety in their environment. Arrange for them some secluded corners or niches, various elevations, for example, an inverted flower pot or other objects for games.

How to train a guinea pig to be clean?

The biggest problem when organizing a long walk around the room is that guinea pigs can stain the floor or carpets with urine or droppings. But it turns out that pigs can be trained to go to the toilet in a certain place, just like cats and dogs!

Not every guinea pig can be taught to be clean. One animal quickly understands what is required of him, the other takes more time to do this, but the sooner steps are taken in this direction, the greater the chance of success. You should proceed as follows:

  • already during the first walk, put a small bowl in the room with bedding for cats or from a cage and put a few balls of litter in it;
  • if she did “her business” in some other place, collect the balls of litter, put them in a bowl and put the animal in it; never yell at the guinea pig and never give him even the slightest click – this can frighten him and make it difficult to get used to cleanliness;
  • see if the guinea pig has taken a fancy to some corner, and put a toilet bowl there;
  • Reward your guinea pig with a treat each time if he has used his litter box correctly.
  • puddles of urine on the floor or carpet can be cleaned with vinegar – this disinfects and at the same time creates an unpleasant odor for the animals to smell. Litter balls, if dry, can be easily swept up or vacuumed away.

NoteA: If you’re letting your guinea pig roam around your home, put a litter bowl in every room. Nooks and crannies under beds, wardrobes, etc. should be blocked or lined with newspapers.
