Get rid of the smell of a cat in the apartment with a homemade stain remover

Cats bring us a lot of joy, but the dirt and smells that come with living with a cat can be very frustrating. Luckily, you can make a simple homemade stain remover to help keep your home clean and fresh. Homemade stain removers are safe to use in the house where our little brothers live, and are usually cheaper than store-bought ones. Home remedies effectively remove stubborn stains and odors, from urine to hairballs and vomit.

Get rid of the smell of a cat in the apartment with a homemade stain removerVomiting and hairballs

Materials: baking soda, vinegar, water, household spray bottle, three old rags.

Instructions:

  1. Wipe vomit or hairballs off the carpet or floor with a damp cloth.
  2. If the vomit stain is on the carpet, after wiping it with a damp cloth, sprinkle baking soda on it and leave it for an hour to absorb moisture. If the stain is on a hard floor, go to step 3.
  3. In a large bowl, mix table vinegar with warm water (about 1 cup of water to 1 cup of low-strength table vinegar). Pour the mixture into a household spray bottle.
  4. Spray the resulting mixture of vinegar and water on the stain. You will hear a hiss. As soon as the hiss subsides, wipe the soda with a rag.
  5. Continue spraying on the stain and wiping it with a clean rag. Repeat until the stain is gone. Try not to overdo it and ruin the area where the stain was.

Urine stain remover

Materials: table vinegar, baking soda, dilute hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing detergent, enzymatic cleaner, old rags, old towel

Instructions:

  1. Use an old towel to absorb as much cat urine as possible and throw it away when you’re done.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda on the stain and let it sit for about ten minutes.
  3. Pour some weakly concentrated table vinegar onto the baking soda and after a few seconds of sizzling, wipe the liquid with a clean rag.
  4. After the stain is removed, it is time to get rid of the smell. Make a stain and odor remover with a few tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and a couple of drops of dish soap. Pour the mixture over the stain (pre-test the mixture on an area of the carpet that is not visible from under the furniture to make sure it does not discolour the carpet).
  5. Rub a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing detergent into the carpet and rub the fibers with a stiff brush, then rinse quickly to prevent the carpet from fading. If it is a hard floor, it is best to spray the mixture with a spray bottle onto the area of the stain and wipe thoroughly.
  6. Use a hair dryer to dry the wet area faster. The spot area may appear fresh and clean, but the uric acid found in cat urine is re-crystallizing, so the next step is VERY IMPORTANT!
  7. After about 24 hours, blot the area with an enzymatic cleaner and leave to dry. To prevent family members from stepping on the stain, cover it with a bowl or aluminum foil. Complete drying may take a day or two.
  8. Once the area is completely dry, mop or vacuum as usual and repeat once a week with an enzymatic cleaner if necessary.

Finally, it’s a good idea to check with your veterinarian about your cat’s urination habits to make sure that litter failure is not a symptom of a urinary tract disease or other medical condition. It is also worth considering switching your cat to a food formulated to reduce hairball formation. Now that you know how to make your own stain remover, you can quickly take the necessary action and skillfully clean up any mess.
