Exercises for Large Breed Dogs

If you have a Great Dane, Greyhound, Boxer or other large or very large breed, there is probably nothing better for both of you than to get outside and work out together. This will help you stay healthy and also keep you connected.

What you need to remember

Dogs of large or very large breeds are prone to joint diseases. That’s why it’s especially important for them to exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight, as obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are major risk factors for joint problems.

While it might be a tempting idea to take your large-breed puppy—and his seemingly endless supply of energy—on your daily run, remember that until he’s grown, his skeleton isn’t fully developed to support such activity. Puppies need exercise, but they should avoid excessive or intense exercise until they are old enough to avoid injury.

If you have any concerns about your dog’s health, be sure to check with your veterinarian before embarking on a new exercise program. This tip applies to you too! If you have health concerns, please consult your doctor before making any changes to your exercise level.

So, with all that in mind, let’s look at some fun activities for you and your big-eared friend to keep both of you fit, active, and having fun!

classic walk

Working out together can be as simple as walking down the street or visiting the local dog park. Would you like to sweat? Add to that short bursts of jogging, regular running, or high-knee walking to get your heart rate up and burn more calories for both of you.

Do you want something more serious? Walk on different surfaces such as sand, shallow water, leaf litter, snow, or uneven pavement. Or use obstacles such as benches, trees, ditches, and logs to help your dog jump, crawl, and balance. Remember to keep the jump height low until the dog is one year old.

“Aport”

The good old game takes a new turn. Take your dog’s favorite toy and toss it. But this time run after the dog to see who gets to it first. However, refrain from throwing sticks, as they can break and cause injury to the animal.

Salki

Remember your childhood and play tag with your dog. You’ll both get some great exercise and your big eared buddy will love chasing you. Please note that if your dog is a herding breed, such as a shepherd dog, this game may inadvertently cause some aggression in her.

Obstacle course for dogs

First, place some fitness steps or similar items throughout your yard. Then put a leash on your pet and go through the obstacle course at a fast pace. When you get to the steps, do some exercise like touching your toes, push-ups, or squats to get a good stretch. The dog will be in constant motion and will enjoy spending time with you.

dog park

Your local dog park is like a birthday party and an aerobics class all rolled into one. Take your dog there or invite friends with their dogs and turn this event into a collective leisure. Be sure to do some behavioral and social work with your pet to help him be calm and friendly in such a chaotic environment.

Red dot chase

The invention of the laser pointer has brought endless hours of fun and physical activity to pets. On a rainy day, this is great entertainment for home gatherings. Or, head out into the yard and play a modified version of the game of tag, holding the pointer from behind as you run. Be careful not to get the laser into your dog’s eyes, and if you’re playing indoors, you’ll likely want to keep fragile items away.

What is nearby

Many communities host many races, swims in public pools or lakes, and other events where you and your dog can train alongside hundreds or thousands of other pets and their owners. Maintain friendly relations with your dog and other pet owners, because you lead an active lifestyle and have a great time.

Hikes

Your big dog loves the outdoors just as much as you do. So the next time you lace up your hiking boots, take out the leash and take it with you! Choose a trail that is the right length and height for your ability, and take enough water to keep both of you hydrated.
