Natural habitat and color

The animal is small, about 20 cm long. The body is covered with small scales, on which pimples stand out here and there. The color has many variants (morphs): from bright red to purple-olive shades. Morphs are bred with the help of selection, very interesting variations are obtained that attract even experienced terrariumists.

These geckos are nocturnal. They live on rocky foothills and semi-fixed sands in the north-west of India, in Pakistan, in the south-east of Afghanistan, in the east of Iran.

Equipment for keeping eublefar

Minimum terrarium size for one gecko: 30 x 30 x 30 cm. Ideally, however, 45 x 45 x 30 cm or more is desirable.

Temperature

The temperature in the terrarium is divided into two zones: the warm third and the cool zone.

During the day, in a warm zone, the temperature should be 30-33 degrees. In the opposite, cold corner – 23-26 degrees. For heating in a terrarium, it is most convenient to use a thermo-stone or thermomat. In the case of using a thermomat, the temperature is controlled by the substrate layer. If you want to increase the temperature in the warm zone, then you need to reduce the layer of sand in the warm zone. At night, a temperature difference is desirable, so heating and lighting devices must be turned off.

Substratum and shelters

Eublefars are very fond of digging and digging, so they use natural desert soils as a substrate, such as Desert Sand or Stone Desert.

Shelters should be installed in the terrarium. They can be made in the form of a stone. You can build caves and burrows from special substrates. Additionally, snags, stones and decorations are placed along which the reptile can move.

Eublefar terrarium lighting

To create natural conditions, lamps are installed as lighting in the terrarium. Reptile Vision or Natural Light. To stimulate activity and mating games at night, it will not hurt to install a night vision lamp Night Glo.

Can be used for night lighting Full moon, which automatically turns on when daylight is turned off, helping geckos see in the dark.

Light day in a terrarium is usually 12-14 hours.

Humidity and ventilation

Only use the terrarium with a proven ventilation system that promotes good air exchange and prevents the windows from fogging up.

Humidity in the terrarium is maintained only during the molting period. When the eublefar is preparing for molting (the color has brightened and clouded), the sand is moistened under the shelter. Do this every time this period comes. If you are using special wet chambers WET ROCK, then the need for additional soil moisture is eliminated.

Leopard geckos drink water by lapping like cats from a bowl, so a small drinking bowl should be placed in the terrarium, which is regularly replenished with fresh drinking water.

Feeding eublefar at home

Eublefars are insectivorous animals. Their diet at home is: locusts, crickets, caterpillars and other insects. Before feeding insects, it is necessary to pollinate with calcium and vitamins. To do this, pour the right amount of insects into a glass, sprinkle them with calcium and vitamins on top, shake. Feed pollinated insects to the animal with tweezers or release them into the terrarium.

For food, you can use frozen insects or special Repashy food – such as Grub Pie. They also need to be thawed at room temperature, sprinkled with calcium and vitamins. Grub Pie is prepared according to the instructions, cut into cubes and fed with tweezers.

The amount and frequency of feeding depends on the age of the eublefar.

Approximate feeding schedule: 1-6 months – every day or every other day for 2-6 crickets. 6-12 months – in two days ~ 4-8 crickets or 1-3 locusts. 12 months and older – once or twice a week for 5-10 crickets or 2-4 locusts.

Eublefar should always have access to fresh drinking water.

Additionally, you can put a bowl with pure calcium, without vitamins and D3, in the eublefaru terrarium. Geckos that need more calcium will readily eat it themselves. This is especially important for juveniles, pregnant and laying females.

If eublefar refuses to eat, what should I do?

First of all, you need to understand whether the reason for refusing food is related to any diseases. Assess the condition of the gecko, whether the tail has blown off, whether the consistency of the stool has changed, whether there have been burps of food – these are the cases when it is worth contacting specialists and contacting us for advice.

Secondly, you need to check whether the temperature regime in the terrarium meets the standards. If the conditions and condition of the eublefar did not change, then it’s okay – he just doesn’t want to eat. Skip feedings, reduce the amount of insects eaten, increase intervals.

Adult individuals can refuse food for a long time, while not losing weight. Such animals can be sent for wintering. Often during the breeding season, males and females can refuse to eat, and there is nothing to worry about.

Reproduction and lifespan of leopard geckos

Reproduction of eublefars is a rather interesting process that will require a little preparation. First of all, you need to study color variations, colors of eublefars – morphs, choose pairs that are suitable and interesting for breeding.

Secondly, prepare and create conditions for reproduction. Eublefars under one and a half years of age should not be allowed into breeding. Females are prepared in advance for the season, fattened, and given special vitamin supplements. Animals should be hibernated before planting.

During the season, females can make from 2 to 8 clutches from one mating. Clutch contains 1-2 eggs. The eggs are transferred to the incubator, where after a certain period of time small eublefaras are born. The incubation period is directly dependent on temperature. At 27 ° C, it is about two months. Temperature also affects the sex of the offspring. Females hatch at the same 27°C and males at 30°C.

With proper maintenance and care, eublefaras can live up to 25 years.

Shared content

Eublefars can be kept singly or in groups: a male and several females or just a few females. Two males cannot be kept together, they are very territorial and will fight.

Diseases of eublefars

Like any animal, the leopard gecko can get sick. Of course, if all the rules are followed, the risk of disease is minimized. If you suspect any disease, call our store – we will advise you.

  • If it is lethargy and lack of appetite, check the temperature in the terrarium.
  • If the primary signs of rickets appear (soft bones, the gecko crouches on its elbows when moving), make sure that the animal receives all the vitamin and mineral supplements in the right doses.
  • If you notice the remaining pieces of molting on the body, tail or fingers, then they must be removed after soaking in warm water.

Communication with a person

Eublefars very quickly get used to communicating with a person and calmly sit on their hands. In the first week after the acquisition, it is worth limiting contact with the animal in order to allow it to adapt. Young individuals are advised not to disturb without reason.

In order to tame, it is necessary to feed eublefars from your hands, get them out of the terrarium for a few minutes and hold them in your hands. When the gecko realizes that you are not a danger, he will stop being afraid of you and will come out on his own. However, this cannot be guaranteed, as each animal has an individual character. If the reptile is not stressed outside the terrarium, you can let it walk around the room, after closing the windows and locking other pets in separate rooms. Eublefar should be outside the terrarium only under supervision.
