Character
Until the 20th century, English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were considered one breed that did not have clear parameters. However, in 1902, the division nevertheless happened: animals lighter than 13 kg were called Cocker Spaniels, and larger ones became Springer Spaniels, and a standard was developed for each breed.
The English Springer Spaniel is an active and friendly dog. There is no aggression or anger in it, and sometimes it seems that the pet is always in a wonderful mood. Sometimes, however, the fun goes beyond: the dog is too fond of the game and starts to indulge. Such behavior needs to be stopped in time.
Representatives of the breed are very sociable, they need the company of a person and a beloved family. It is impossible to leave the dog alone for a long time, it quickly begins to get bored and yearn. A pet can find an interesting activity for itself, but only the owner is unlikely to like it, because shoes, toys, legs of tables and chairs will definitely be used – in general, everything that is in the public domain.
Interestingly, despite the seeming frivolity, the English Springer Spaniel can stand up for himself. And in case of danger, he is ready to defend his “flock”. Cowardice is considered a breed defect, and dogs with such qualities are culled.
Behaviour
When thinking about buying a Springer Spaniel, it is worth weighing the pros and cons, because this dog is extremely energetic, and sometimes quite noisy. In no case should you be annoyed with a pet, all the more you should not punish him for his desire to constantly be near the owner. The Springer Spaniel is suitable for open and active people who are ready for pet classes and long walks for several hours a day.
The Springer Spaniel is great with children. He can mess around with them for days on end and is considered a good nanny. The Springer Spaniel gets along well with animals in the same house, but it can be jealous of the owner and try to turn his attention to himself. Birds can become the only problem in the house – hunting instincts are strong in the spaniel.
Care
The beautiful, wavy coat of the Springer Spaniel requires fairly thorough care. The dog is combed with a massage brush twice a week. During molting, the procedure is carried out more often.
Pay special attention to the dog’s ears. Hanging ears of an animal can become a place for the occurrence and development of infectious diseases if they are not cleaned in time.
Conditions of detention
The Springer Spaniel needs many hours of walks with obligatory sports elements: running, fetching, etc. Do not forget that this is a hunting dog that needs physical activity. In addition, it is important to monitor his diet. Like all dogs in this group, he is prone to weight gain.
