Character

The English Shepherd is a breed native to the United States. She received the name in honor of her ancestors – shepherd dogs from England. Dogs were brought to America by early settlers. Gradually, with the settlement and development of agriculture, the breed developed, interbreeding with others. Among the ancestors of the English Shepherd are the Border Collie and the Australian Shepherd .

English Shepherds are good-natured dogs. Like all animals of this group, they are infinitely devoted to the owner, love all family members equally and do everything to make them happy. In addition, representatives of the breed are friendly and welcoming. They are not against new acquaintances. However, if the dog feels danger, there will be no trace of softness, in which case the pet will protect its family to the last.

English Shepherds love to learn, this trait they inherited from their closest relatives – the Border Collie. Coupled with the desire to please the owner, these qualities give an excellent result of training . Representatives of the breed are really easy to train, and even a novice owner can handle it. However, for the best result, it is important to interest the dog, to find a training method that is suitable for her.

Behaviour

English Shepherds are excellent candidates for sports, and we are talking not only about pair training with the owner, but also about specialized dog training. A dog can show good results, for example, in agility competitions.

In the past, the main business of English Shepherds was to help shepherds, guard the herd and protect it. At the same time, the dog has strong hunting instincts. Therefore, alas, a shepherd dog is unlikely to get along with small animals. However, if the puppy gets into a house where there are already pets, most likely there will be no problems.

The English Shepherd is good with children. Agile, addicting and funny dogs will be excellent nannies. Moreover, they perceive children as an object of protection, which means that a child will always be safe with a pet.

English Shepherd Care

The long, soft coat of the English Shepherd is prone to tangles. To avoid this, the owners comb the dog a couple of times a week with a stiff comb. During the molting period, the process of changing wool becomes especially noticeable, therefore, the combing procedure is repeated more often using a furminator.

It is very important to monitor the condition of the eyes, ears and claws of the pet. To keep your dog’s teeth in order, you also need to periodically clean them .

Conditions of detention

An active and very energetic English Shepherd requires appropriate walks. This breed is not suitable for people who prefer passive recreation. Jumping, running, frisbee, accompanying the owner on a bicycle are just a small part of the physical exercises that you can do with your pet.
