Eichornia is excellent
Eichhornia excellent or Water hyacinth, scientific name Eichhornia crassipes. The plant comes from the waters of South America, grows in regions with a very humid and warm climate. However, it is now also found in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia. It grows in various biotopes (rivers, swamps, lakes) and even in heavily polluted water bodies, such as canals near settlements. Able to grow rapidly and in some regions is considered a weed plant, which is actively fought.
While other species of the genus Eichhornia belong to stem (stalk) plants, the Water hyacinth forms floating leaves connected in the form of a rosette, i.e., leaf blades grow from a single center and do not have a pronounced stem. A characteristic feature of this species is the leaf petioles swollen at the base, which are air chambers, thanks to which the plant is held on the surface of the water, as well as underwater roots of an unusual blue color.
Due to its size, it should not be used in small aquariums. In large tanks, soft slightly acidic water and an elevated temperature of at least 26 ° C with high humidity are considered optimal for growth, so a lid is required. If the temperature is increased to 32 ° C, then Eichonia gives an excellent arrow, on which light purple flowers bloom with a strong persistent aroma. Most often it is used in open garden ponds. In a temperate climate zone, during a long hot summer, it may even bloom. Sensitive to the content of dissolved trace elements. Slow growth and light green leaves are a sign of a nutrient deficiency or low temperature.
