Echinodorus
Types of Aquarium Plants

Echinodorus

Echinodorus are aquatic plants of the Chastukhaceae family. They come from South and Central America. They are found in swamps and swampy areas of rivers and lakes, grow mainly in open areas well lit by sunlight.

The name Echinodorus comes from two ancient Greek words “echius” and “doros”, which loosely means “rough leather bottle”, alluding to the appearance of the fruits of this group of plants, formed from above-water inflorescences.

Depending on the specific species, they can differ greatly from each other. Some have oval broad leaves on long petioles, others have narrow lanceolate leaves, more reminiscent of lawn grass. The color varies from pale green to purple or red. Upon reaching the surface form small flowers.

Demanding conditions. When grown in aquariums, they need a high level of light and nutritious soft soil rich in iron, so most species of Echinodorus are not recommended for beginner aquarists.
