dog wheelchair
Before you start choosing a wheelchair for your dog, you should consult with your veterinarian. The fact is that experts do not always recommend using it.
On the one hand, a dog stroller is necessary when the animal cannot move independently – in particular, after amputation of limbs. On the other hand, if there is even a minimal chance of recovery (for example, when the pet’s limbs are only partially paralyzed), veterinarians try to do without a wheelchair. So the dog will be able to develop muscles and joints and will not get used to moving around with assistance.
Types of wheelchairs:
Frontal models are designed for dogs with problems with the forelimbs;
Classic or rear is a wheelchair for a disabled dog whose hind limbs have been amputated;
A quad-type stroller is an option for dogs that have amputated or paralyzed both front and hind limbs.
When choosing a wheelchair for dogs, do not chase low cost. A good and high-quality device will last a long time and will become an indispensable support for a pet.
What to look for when choosing a wheelchair?
Ergonomics and convenience
The stroller should be light, especially when it comes to small breed dogs. If the device is too heavy, it will be difficult and uncomfortable for the animal to move around with it.
Quality of materials
The best stroller models are made of aluminum or plastic. The fabric part, as a rule, is made of breathable, but wear-resistant materials (for example, perforated neoprene – aeroprene).
Wheels
One of the most important parts of a stroller is its wheels. They must be selected strictly according to the size of the dog on an individual basis. It is also important to choose the type of wheels: for walking on a dirt road, wide and heavy wheels will be the best option, and for walking on an asphalt road, models with light and thin elements are suitable.
Strollers. For whom?
In recent years, the stroller for dogs has become more and more popular. Outwardly, it is very similar to an ordinary baby carriage, the fundamental difference is only in the frame and box. Of course, passers-by still have a rather mixed reaction to a dog in a stroller. However, the reasons for its purchase may be different.
First of all, a stroller is an ideal solution for walking a pet during the rehabilitation period after surgery, when physical activity is contraindicated. In addition, this device is also suitable for animals that suffer from allergies to reagents in winter.
There are strollers for dogs of small breeds and for large ones. Therefore, when choosing a vehicle, it is important to pay attention to the size of the box. In a pet that is too small, it can be cramped, and in too large it can be so spacious that it can be swept away at the slightest bump in the road.
It is also worth paying attention to the quality of the material from which the stroller is made, including fabric and wheels. The same principle works here as with any other stroller: the wider the wheels, the more stable they are.
Finally, don’t buy a stroller that your dog can easily get out of. It is not safe. It is best to choose models with a zippered box with a wide view.
