Do dogs stink

Sometimes only the fear that the house will stink strongly of a dog keeps a person from acquiring a pet. Do dogs stink?

One way or another, all living things smell. And dogs are no exception. So smelling is completely normal. The smell is the result of the life of the dog. But in different dogs it is different, including in intensity. What determines whether a dog will smell strongly of dog?

The smell intensifies after swimming, rain, or if the dog has been under the snow. That is, wet wool smells stronger. But sometimes the smell of a dog suddenly intensifies, although before that it was weak. What does it depend on?

There are several reasons for this.

  1. The natural fats of the skin have accumulated in the wool, and it is they that give off the “aroma” of the dog. Solution: Wash your dog regularly. At the same time, it is worth using high-quality products and accustoming the dog to bathing so that it does not worry, because when the dog is nervous, the smell also intensifies.
  2. Poor dog care. If the pet is not combed (or not trimmed, in the case of wire-haired dogs), the undercoat begins to accumulate moisture, rot and, accordingly, smell unpleasant. Solution: quality pet care.
  3. breed predisposition. It is believed that the most “odorous” breeds are the Basset Hound, the West Highland White Terrier, the English Springer Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel. There is a hypothesis that this is due to the predisposition of dogs of these breeds to seborrhea. Also, hunting dogs bred to work in the water smell strongly because of the more intense work of the sweat and sebaceous glands.
  4. Wrong feeding. Food allergies can cause hair and skin problems, and therefore an increase in bad breath. Solution: Proper feeding and treatment of the dog if necessary.
  5. Swimming in ponds in summer. As already mentioned, wet wool smells stronger. Solution: Dry your dog well after bathing.
  6. Hormonal surges during estrus. Here you need to be careful, sometimes an unpleasant smell is a symptom of the disease, and in this case it is necessary to contact the veterinarian in time.
  7. Diseases. Sometimes the bad odor is exacerbated if the dog suffers from infections, gastritis, cancer, disorders of the liver, kidneys or gallbladder, problems with the oral cavity or ears. In this case, the solution: timely treatment.
