Distinctive features of Afghan pigeons
Once upon a time, when ancient civilizations were at their peak, people tamed not only dogs and cats, but also pigeons. For the first time, the Egyptians and Greeks succeeded. It is called the domestication of pigeons – pigeon breeding, which has become a tradition that has been going on for several millennia in our time. In Russia, this tradition originated only in the 16th century.
There are breeds of fighting pigeons that are given the most attention, as they are very beautiful.
If you want to keep a pigeon, you must be prepared for the fact that they are very whimsical and require careful grooming. Fortunately, Afghan pigeons are not very picky in this regard. In order for the pigeons to feel good, they must be kept in a separate dovecote or a special aviary, preferably separately from others, so that the breeds do not mix.
Fighting pigeons are birds that can perform somersaults over their heads in flight, they also have an unusual manner of flying, they not only know how to somersault, but also specifically beat their wings in flight. There are quite a lot of such pigeons in nature.
From some sources, you can find out that Afghan pigeons appeared in connection with the modification of the Bessarabian Turmans. But Afghans differ in that they have a larger head, body and beak size, and they also come in a wide variety of colors. Males have a visible difference from females – they have a beard. They are also distinguished from other pigeons by their special gait, fighting and flying qualities.
The Afghan breed is also rich in varieties of pigeons. There are completely different in plumage and feather color, as well as eye color. There are breeds that are more common, and there are less. They are united by a common feature – bare paws and two tufts. The anterior is open and curves over the beak, the posterior is small, with whorls. There is a tuft located on the front of the head, and there is on the back. The vesicles are usually light in color, the eyelids are not very developed. The color of the eyes varies from light to black, there are also colored ones.
They are very hardy and are able to fly up to eight hours at a time at high altitude.
To equip the “home” of a pigeon, you need to choose feeders made of plastic or glass and do not forget to keep the cages clean. Water should be given clean, preferably disinfected. It is very beneficial for the health of pigeons to give them germinated grain. It is very important to maintain general cleanliness.
This breed is very unusual in itself, not only in appearance, but also in its fighting qualities and endurance. People who breed pigeons are especially fond of this breed.
