Diseases of the Cornish Rex, what to feed and how to avoid overeating
A few diseases
You should at least occasionally show your pet to the doctor, including for vaccination, which must be carried out annually, especially if the plans include participation in exhibitions and walks in the fresh air. You also need to regularly carry out the prevention of helminthiasis (worm infestation) and treat the animal from external parasites (fleas, ticks).
A visit to the veterinary clinic should not be postponed if the discharge from the eyes has become too plentiful or some dermatological problems have appeared. Cornish have a tendency to fungal dermatitis, occasionally hypotrichosis can occur – an ailment in which the coat is underdeveloped or completely absent.
Cornish Rex are worse than other cats tolerate anesthesia and take a long time to recover from general anesthesia. This should be taken into account during surgical interventions – one should try to reduce the dose of anesthetic drugs, be attentive to the postoperative care of the pet, especially if he has had a violation of coordination of movements for a long time.
Warm relationship
Cornish Rex are sensitive to cold, but to a lesser extent than sphinxes, because they have a short, but dense coat. So they need to be protected from drafts, the house should be dry and warm so that the pet does not catch a cold. If you decide to go for a walk in the company of your pet, do it only in warm weather and, if possible, dress it up in a cat sweater or jacket. Any cat is happy to sit down by the radiator or heater, loves to spend time in the owner’s bed, but for the Cornish this is not even a whim, but a necessity, including in the summer – warm places attract them like a magnet.
Follow the measure
The appetite of the Cornish Rex is a headache for the owners: these cats are ready to eat almost constantly. Overeating is one of the main problems owners of these graceful cats can face. True, gracefulness will not go anywhere – the Cornish are so active and playful that they will most likely have time to use up all the extra calories in a day. But such gluttony can have a negative effect on the work of the digestive system. Therefore, you should strictly monitor the nutrition of the Cornish Rex, the size of portions and their number, do not overfeed the animal and do not indulge his desire to treat himself to something from the master’s table. Adult animals should be fed no more than twice a day, dividing the daily portion in half.
What to feed a Cornish Rex?
Cornish Rex diets should consist primarily of a combination of dry and wet premium canned foods appropriate for the age of the animal. At the same time, “drying” should be no more than a sixth of the entire diet. These cats have a sensitive digestive system, and this is the reason for such feeding.
