Differences between Akana dog food lines
The range of Acana Dog food is represented by four lines, among which you can choose a diet for a pet of any age and breed. It is not easy to navigate in such a large variety, but we will help you with this now.
Acana Classics
The Acana Classics dog food formula includes a small amount of chopped oats as a source of carbohydrates, and meat ingredients make up half of the composition. For example, the Prairie Poultry diet is fresh turkey and chicken, while the Acana Classics Wild Coast dog food contains three types of fish.
In addition, any Akana Classic dog food also contains vegetables and fruits as an additional source of nutrients and fiber for good digestion.
Acana branded food in this line has the most affordable price, and is also sold in packages up to 17 kg, which makes it even more economical, especially if you have a lot of animals. At the same time, Acana Classics has a lower meat content than other lines, making it ideal for transitioning from conventional high-carbohydrate foods to Acana biologically appropriate foods.
Acana Heritage
Heritage in English means “heritage, heritage”, and this is no coincidence, because it was Akana Heritage dog food that became the first diets in which the brand’s manufacturer began to use the fruits of labor of Canadian farmers, cattle breeders and fishermen. This eliminates the need to haul groceries, which is why Acana Heritage dog food contains so much fresh meat, fruits, vegetables and herbs.
This line is the most diverse in its range and includes Akana Heritage puppy food (Puppy & Junior, Puppy Large Breed, Puppy Small Breed), universal for dogs of all breeds, for large breeds, for small breeds, as well as special diets for animals with special needs – overweight, increased activity, age-related changes.
Whichever diet you choose, the Acana Heritage dog food formula remains the same: a lot of fresh meat (up to 70% chicken, turkey, fish), some vegetables and fruits delivered from the region where the production is located, and no grain at all. These biologically appropriate feeds are a real asset, created with love for animals and their land.
The great thing about Acana Heritage is that thanks to its variety of diets, you can choose food for any pet, including pellet size, age and activity level of the pet. And although, in fact, proper nutrition for a dog as a species is a universal concept, an individual approach can also be very important for owners.
Acana Regionals
As the name of the line suggests (regionals means “district”, “local”), Acana Reginales dog food is made from ingredients that are grown near the Acana plant in Alberta, Canada. The rich resources of this region make it possible to obtain a large amount of fresh meat from a wide variety of livestock and poultry, grow generous crops of vegetables and fruits, and fish from local rivers and lakes and off the Pacific coast. Acana Regionals dog food is formulated with the highest fresh meat content (70%), making the three diets in the line the gold standard of biological conformity.
Acana Regionals dog food includes chicken, turkey, rainbow trout and walleye (Wild Prairie); duck, turkey, lamb and northern pike (Grasslands); finally, herring, perch, flounder and hake (Pacifica).
There is no such variety of fresh meat ingredients in any brand line, and only a small amount of fresh fruits and vegetables serve as an additional source of nutrients and fiber for proper digestion.
Acana Regionals is suitable for all sizes and ages, so you can start feeding it to puppies from an early age at the recommended feeding rates on the package.
Acana Singles
There are cases when feeds with a large amount of meat components are poorly tolerated by a dog due to the peculiarities of the enzymatic system of its gastrointestinal tract, food allergies or intolerances.
Acana Singles dog food is formulated specifically for these pets, and as the line’s name suggests (singles – “single”), each diet contains one source of animal protein of the type that most rarely causes digestive problems.
Choose from pork (Acana Singles Yorkshire Pork), lamb (Acana Singles Grass-Fed Lamb), duck (Acana Singles Free-Run Duck) or fish (Acana Singles Pacific Pilchard) based on this diet. which suits your pet the best. You can even switch between them without a long transition.
One type of meat does not mean less meat, and this is true of any Acana Singles dog food, which is not at all poor or defective – they contain 50% meat ingredients. To support the health of pets with difficult digestion, Acana Singles dog food contains a certain amount of vegetables and fruits, which serve as a source of nutrients and fiber.
Many owners are leery of single source protein foods because they often fail to address food intolerances and allergies. This happens because the so-called hypoallergenic foods, in fact, in addition to the main protein source designed to eliminate allergies, such as duck or rabbit, often contain chicken fat or eggs. Naturally, with a chicken allergy, all problems begin again. The composition of Acana Singles feed excludes such “surprises” – none of the diets of the line contains eggs, and fat is added to them from the same type of animal, from the meat of which all the feed is made.
Despite some differences, all Akana dog foods meet the biological needs of these animals as predators. This means that in each specific Akana line, the composition for dogs is thought out in accordance with the main, fundamental idea: predators should eat meat, and food varies only depending on the individual needs of the animal.
