Character
The Curly Coated Retriever is one of the oldest dogs bred in England. His ancestors are the Newfoundland and the English Water Spaniel. Also related to the Setter , Poodle and Irish Water Spaniel is not ruled out. The breed standard was first adopted over a century ago – in 1913, and the Curly Coated Retriever was registered in the FCI in 1954 .
Representatives of the breed are not only excellent companions, but also excellent service and hunting dogs. They help a person at customs, in the police, and sometimes even act as guides. Intelligent and balanced curlies will suit both families with children and single people.
A distinctive feature of the Curly Coated Retriever is its devotion. The pet will love all family members equally, without singling out anyone especially. However, the head of the family will have to show from the very beginning who is the leader of the “pack” after all.
Behaviour
Curlies are calm dogs, but even modest and quiet representatives of the breed require training . Sometimes they can be stubborn and even overconfident. No wonder the breeders claim that this is the most independent of all retrievers.
Curly-Coated Retrievers make excellent guard dogs. Unlike their closest brethren, they are not too gullible towards strangers and prefer to make contact gradually.
Curlies get along well with other animals. They favorably treat younger comrades, even cats . Special attachment will be to the animals with which the puppy grew up.
With children, the Curly-Coated Retriever easily makes contact, but will not tolerate pranks and “torment”, so the child must definitely explain the rules of behavior with a dog. Once an offended dog will no longer continue to communicate with children.
Curly Coated Retriever Care
Curly curly hair is its main advantage. And it needs proper care. The dog must be combed with a massage brush, bathed , distributing curls. After combing, you can stroke the pet with a damp hand so that the fluffy hairs take shape again.
Conditions of detention
The Curly Coated Retriever is a hunting breed. Like all hunters, he needs a lot of movement, intense exercise and running. It will be difficult for this dog to live within the city limits, especially if proper attention is not paid to walking. But outside the city, in a private house, Curly will be truly happy. Active walks and fresh air are vital for these wonderful curly pets.
