Cryptocorynes
Types of Aquarium Plants

Cryptocorynes

Cryptocorynes belong to the semi-aquatic plants of the Aroid family (Araceae). Widespread throughout Southeast Asia and the archipelagos of the Indian Ocean up to New Guinea. In nature, they grow in shady places in a humid environment along the banks of rivers and streams flowing under the canopy of tropical forests.

The name of these plants goes back to the words crypto (Latin) and koryne (Greek), which can be conditionally translated as “hidden mace” – a hint at the shape of inflorescences, reminiscent of this military weapon in its shape. In English, the analogy is different, Cryptocorynes are called “Water Flutes”.

Plants of this group differ significantly from each other in the shape, size and color of the leaves. They can be oval green and long-stalked or ribbon-like wavy red. The only thing that unites them is the location of the leaves (grow from one point) and the absence of a stem.

They are widely used in aquariums and paludariums due to their ability to grow above water. It belongs to unpretentious plants, able to successfully adapt to various conditions (lighting, hydrochemical composition of water, the presence of fertilizers). etc.).

However, some species show the best results (density and color of the leaves) only in a certain and rather narrow range of conditions. In addition, abrupt changes in water parameters (temperature, pH, dGH) lead to “Cryptocorin disease”, when the leaves become covered with mucus and die.
