Character
The Catalan Sheepdog is native to the Pyrenees. Even in the XIII century, her ancestors helped the shepherds. Thanks to their dense long hair, these animals easily withstood the harsh climate of the mountains.
The Catalan Sheepdog was recognized as the national Spanish breed at the beginning of the 20th century, and in the 1950s it was registered with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale .
The Catalan Sheepdog is a true working breed. And, like many shepherd dogs, she served not only as a driver, but also as a guard and protector. Therefore, despite the relatively small size, this dog is able to stand up for the family.
The Catalan Sheepdog is a pet of one owner. At the same time, not a single member of the family will be left without her attention. She is sweet, kind and sociable. Dogs of this breed can become excellent nannies: a patient pet will get along even with a baby. In addition, with proper upbringing, the animal will not be jealous of the baby for its owners. It is very important to show the dog that the new family member does not pose a threat to her and she will not be left without attention.
Behaviour
Training a Catalan Sheepdog is not difficult: she is quick-witted and smart. However, the owner will have to be patient. The best way to train a Shepherd Dog is with positive reinforcement, and her main motivation is praise and treats from her beloved owner. Animals do not perceive the increased tone and rudeness.
The breed standard states that the Catalan Sheepdog is capable of making independent decisions. This is most clearly manifested during grazing, when the dog follows the cattle and drives it. She can, without the command of a shepherd, collect animals and manage them.
By the way, the Catalan Sheepdog gets along well with other pets in the house. She is peaceful and is unlikely to be the culprit of the conflict situation. Most likely, she will protect and patronize the smaller “neighbors”. And with cats, these dogs also find a common language.
Catalan Sheepdog Care
The long coat of the Catalan Sheepdog sheds twice a year: in autumn and spring. This process is especially noticeable in animals living on the street. At this time, dogs are brushed almost every day to remove loose hairs and prevent tangles from forming. Usually the procedure is carried out twice a week.
It is also important to monitor the condition of the dog’s ears . Covered with wool, they are prone to the development of various diseases.
Conditions of detention
The Catalan Sheepdog is unpretentious in content, especially if it lives on the street. Own place and free range – all she needs. Representatives of this breed cannot be kept on a leash.
By the way, in an urban environment, these dogs also feel comfortable. The main condition is long walks with the owner in the fresh air.
