The Leopard Dog or Catahoula is native to Louisiana, USA. Her ancestor is the northern wolfhound. However, not all researchers agree with this.

This breed got its name in honor of the district of Catahoula, where it was especially popular. Animals helped farmers graze cattle and pigs. By the way, these dogs showed themselves quite successfully on the hunt. Today, catahoula, unfortunately, is not very well known and not particularly common outside the United States.

The Leopard Dog is a calm, balanced and intelligent breed. It clearly divides people into “us” and “them”. He treats strangers indifferently, does not show aggression and even more so cowardice. But with “their” open, affectionate and friendly. Nevertheless, the main thing in her life is one leader – the owner, to whom the dog obeys unconditionally.

Catahoula training is not an easy process. A beginner in cynology is unlikely to be able to cope with it – he will need the help of a professional . It is very important to establish contact with the pet so that he hears and obeys the owner. Catahoula’s motivation is not only a treat, but also praise, especially from a beloved owner.

Behaviour

Catahoulas usually interact with animals without conflict. In any case, if the neighbor is peaceful, then the dog will be benevolent. The leopard dog will not tolerate aggressive neighbors and will surely show who is in charge in the house.

In general, the Catahoula is a friendly breed. But despite this, she needs early socialization . Already at the age of two or three months, the puppy must be introduced to the outside world, otherwise the catahoula will react nervously to dogs and cats. However, this applies not only to pets of this breed. Socialization is one of the most important stages in the education of every dog.

As for babysitting talents, it cannot be said that a leopard dog is a good choice for a family with a small child. She gets along best with school-age children who know and follow the rules of behavior with pets.

Catahoula Leopard Dog Care

The short coat of a leopard dog does not require special attention from the owner, it is easy to care for it. It is enough to brush your pet once a week , wipe it with a towel or with a damp hand. During the molting period, the procedure should be repeated more often – two to three times a week. It is also important to monitor the ears , claws and teeth of the animal and clean them in time.

Conditions of detention

The leopard dog is not a pet dog. Representatives of this working breed are still most often found on farms. Accustomed to living in freedom, they do not feel too comfortable in an apartment. However, if the owner has time to walk with the pet for a long time in the park or in the forest, there should be no problems. The dog can be occupied with various commands, fetching or, for example, running.
