Can rabbits be fed grass?

If you have a decorative rabbit, one of the first questions will be what to feed him. Do not rush to take your pet for a walk in the hope that the rabbit will figure it out and nibble on some grass in the yard or in the park. Or bring a handful of greens home – for testing. This approach is fundamentally wrong and contrary to the rules for the safety and diet of a domestic rabbit. Why? Let’s figure it out.

It is possible and necessary to feed rabbits with grass, this is an important part of nutrition in the spring and summer. But the grass for the rabbit, like any other dish, the owner must choose and prepare correctly.

You need to make sure that everything that gets into the feeder and into the rabbit’s cage is safe. Firstly, the ecology within the city is such that the grass here is hardly suitable for food. Exhaust gases, walking pets, the territory where wild, stray animals live, the proximity of garbage heaps and landfills – in such an environment you do not need to look for food for a rabbit. If you release an eared fidget on the lawn, the rabbit will simply eat up dusty dirty grass. In this case, indigestion or even poisoning will not keep you waiting. The gastrointestinal tract of decorative domestic rabbits is very delicate.

You probably made all the vaccinations to your pet in a timely manner, but it’s still not worth the risk. Remember that even flies carry parasites and diseases.

So what kind of grass can rabbits eat? Collected in an environmentally friendly place. Even if you are in the forest, in the meadow or in the country, make sure that there is no landfill or highway nearby. Sort the grass carefully so that there are no poisonous or weed plants in the armful. For example, clover, dandelions, plantain, alfalfa can be given to a rabbit. But hemlock, henbane, crow’s eye, lily of the valley and many other dangerous, poisonous plants are not allowed.

If you come across an unfamiliar plant, it is better to throw it away.

Rinse safe plants thoroughly with water and dry with paper towels. Now you can feed your pet!

Do not feed the same rabbit grass all the time. Green grass can be given to rabbits from almost any age, but in small portions. Let the grass dry out a bit first.
