Can parrot food be mixed?
Pet stores now have a fairly large selection of bird food. How to choose the “same” diet and is it possible to mix diets from different manufacturers? Find out in our new article.
Any owner of a feathered friend at least once had a question: how to properly feed a pet so that he is healthy, happy and sings his amazing songs? Let’s start with theory.
The basis of the diet of parrots and finches is carbohydrates and proteins. These are the substances that are found in most grains and fruits – they feed on feathered mischief-makers. The low quality of these substances can lead to deterioration in the condition of the bird, loss of feather color and other problems. The amount of fat in diets for winged pets should be at the level of 2-4%.
An interesting fact: the composition of ready-made feed for large birds can include sunflower seeds, which contain up to 20% fat. Birds adore these seeds, but eating them in large quantities is harmful. It’s something like chips or chocolates for people.
In pet stores you can find a wide variety of diets. We have compiled for you the general signs of a good diet for birds:
– varied composition. The more different grains and natural ingredients in the diet, the better;
– the diet should contain safflower and flax seeds;
– Sunflower seeds in the diet should not be in the first 4 places in the composition.
Pay attention to where the food is made. If the packaging allows you to see the grains, make sure that they are beautiful and the diet does not contain small debris. Ideally, take a closer look at the diets in vacuum packaging, as it preserves the freshness of the product and all the nutrients as much as possible.
The balanced composition of feed mixtures for parrots and exotic birds does not imply mixing different diets. As we have already found out, not all feed ingredients are equally useful in large quantities. This is important and should be followed. In addition, it is beneficial for birds to eat fresh vegetables and fruits as a supplement to their grain diet.
It turns out that by mixing several diets and adding fruits and vegetables to them, you run the risk of raising a gourmet pet who will not eat millet, flax seeds and oats that are healthy for him at all if there are a lot of “snacks” for birds in the mixture. Why eat the healthy when there is the tasty right at your fingertips? Pets, unlike people, cannot consciously choose healthy food, so they need our help.
The best solution is to choose a varied diet with the right content of sunflower seeds and high quality grains, to which special treats of the same brand will be added. Add fresh fruits and vegetables to them in small quantities and do not forget to buy sprouted oats.
We wish health and excellent feathered mood to your pet!
