Budgerigar and cockatiel
Everyone understands that it is not safe for small parrots, which include budgerigars, to contact larger individuals. But we hasten to please you, despite the fact that cockatiels belong to medium parrots, friendship with budgerigars is very popular among them. Only this applies only to life in captivity; in the wild, parrots avoid contact with individuals of other species.
The cohabitation of a budgerigar and cockatiel is practiced by many bird lovers, there are, of course, those who are categorical and insist on a separate living space for each parrot, but it often happens that the birds, having made friends during walks, themselves “move” to live with a neighbor.
Initially, after the mandatory quarantine, the birds get to know each other. The cockatiel and budgerigar should each have their own cage, designed for a specific type of bird. Over time, if you see that a close friendship has developed between the birds and they strive to settle together, you can purchase a large cage, the size of two cockatiels and arrange it according to the needs of each bird. In cockatiel and budgerigar, food, like feeders and drinkers, should be individual and designed for the type of parrot, the diameter of the perches and the size of the toys, they must also be safe for a larger cockatiel and acceptable for a budgerigar.
Professional breeders still do not recommend keeping these parrots together in the same cage. The reasons for this are different requirements for the conditions for keeping birds: the diameter of the perches, the difference in feed, and, if necessary, a course of vitamins or drugs – the difficulty in distributing the dosage and not only. And of course, the temperament of budgerigars and the patience of cockatiels do not always find a happy medium. The wavy man is able to “get” the cockatiel with his impudence, and she, in turn, without restraining herself, can hit the flirty tail. The cockatiel’s beak is much more massive, larger and stronger than that of the budgerigar, and for a small parrot, everything can end in disability.
Acquaintance of the budgerigar and cockatiel
The first walk of parrots takes place only under the supervision of the owner. First, you release one feathered one, allow him to come to the cage with a new friend, then, having previously closed the first one in his cage, you can let the newcomer out for a walk. Whether to take walks together or not, you make a decision based on the behavior of your pets. How do they react to each other, is there aggression or just curiosity and a craving for communication. There is an opinion that friendship between parrots of different sexes is more successful, but this is not always the case. It all depends on the age and nature of the particular bird. In most cases, cockatiels and budgerigars enjoy walking together and happily keep each other company. After the flights, it is desirable that everyone returns to their home.
Corella or budgerigar
If you are faced with the choice of who to buy a cockatiel or budgerigar, there are several determining factors that can influence your decision.
In a young budgerigar, you can determine the sex, they make contact with a person more easily, they talk better, are more energetic, nimble and cocky, they can be very annoying and intrusive. Although the cage for the budgerigar is slightly smaller than that of the cockatiel, space to fly and a play area are a must for all types of parrots.
Corella – it is difficult to determine the sex of a young chick and a lutinos, males can sing, although they have a loud and sharp voice, females are quieter and calmer. Corella is a very peaceful and balanced bird, has the ability to talk, but is slightly lower than that of budgerigars. For cockatiel, you need to allocate more space for the cage and its size should allow the bird to spread its wings freely.
Each type of parrot has its pros and cons in terms of keeping in captivity. But both of these species are excellent companions for humans, and if you suddenly decide to acquire both, you will not be disappointed. Birds can be friends both with each other and with humans. Do not forget that the character of each parrot is individual, there are always exceptions in the form of energetic cockatiels and reserved budgerigars.
