Biodynamic discovers new ability of guinea pigs

Far North Queensland farmer has found a new use for pet guinea pigs.

If you thought that a guinea pig is just a funny animal that only does what it nibbles on something and sleeps sweetly in a cage – get ready to be pleasantly surprised.

Australian biodynamic farmer John Gargan has adopted several guinea pigs. An innovator by nature, John decided to experiment. He noticed that pigs love to gnaw on grass, including weeds. However, they do not dig holes and do not climb trees or bushes. Then the farmer decided to check if the pig could help in weeding the plot.

John has built a wonderful natural environment around a site with trees that need to be weeded. He took care not only of water for his new assistants, but also of shelters so that the pigs could hide from the birds. And even decided to install an electric fence against snakes.

The farmer was so inspired by the results that he increased the gilt population to 50. “The gilts did a good job on the grass in the yard! It was everywhere, even in the trees – and quite thick. The pigs lived here for only a week – and now the grass is beautifully cut!” Mr. Gargan is pleased.

The farmer is so enthusiastic about the new helpers that he is happy to improve their living conditions. For example, he builds new enclosures for pets so that they can breed. “When their population increases, they will even be able to fight back intruders!” John is sure.

It remains only to enjoy the wonderful life of pigs on Mr. Gargan’s farm: fresh air, a lot of delicious food and communication. And, of course, a caring person nearby!
