Description
Outwardly, they can differ significantly from each other both in size and shape of the body, and in color. In addition, many ornamental species not found in the wild have been bred, such as an albino form or a genetically modified fluorescent variety (luminous fish). The differences between the male and female are insignificant, so it is extremely difficult to distinguish from each other.
Features:
- Easy to keep and breed
- Very active and mobile schooling fish
- Can be dangerous for species that are too small and fish with long fins
Behavior
They belong to schooling and very mobile species, they actively interact with neighbors in the aquarium. Not all of them will like this behavior, so you should avoid introducing slow and smaller fish. Those with long fins are also at risk – Barbs often bite off or damage them. Good compatibility is observed with other mobile and non-aggressive species.
Content
For many years, these fish have been kept in aquariums and have successfully adapted to the artificial habitat. They are not demanding on the diet, they are happy to accept most popular feeds, they can live exclusively on a diet of dry foods (flakes, granules
Decoration also does not matter much, the main thing is that there is enough space for swimming in the water column. Barbs prefer soft slightly acidic water and subdued lighting.
Reproduction
Reproduction occurs regularly if the Barbs are kept in suitable conditions and there are several sexually mature males and females in the aquarium at the same time. During the spawning period, the eggs randomly scatter on the substrate and from that moment on they become left to their own devices. Parental instincts are not developed, so adult fish, on occasion, will definitely feast on their own fry.
