Why is it a great idea to have a rodent?
Do you want to get a rodent, but have not decided yet? Not sure if a guinea pig is right for you or a cat is better? Let’s figure it out together!
The first criterion for choosing a pet is your sympathy. If you love dogs, then a hamster has little chance of holding a big place in your heart. If you do not like rats, then keeping them will not bring you joy, even if your child sincerely dreams of them. But the choice is determined not only by personal preferences.
Before you buy a pet, you need to objectively assess your capabilities. No matter how much you like alabai, you should not start it in a one-room apartment. Unlimited love for Maine Coons means nothing if you are allergic to cats. Add to this your lifestyle, workload, health status and other factors. Many animals require not only careful care, but also constant contact. It is very important for them to be close to the owner and always interact with him. In the modern rhythm of life, not everyone can afford it. But this does not mean that the idea of having a pet will have to be abandoned.
If it is not always possible to get a cat or a dog, then there are no problems with rodents.
Rodents are ideal pets for those who have little free time and those who live in small apartments. Small animals do not need spacious rooms, constant attention, walks, complex care and professional grooming. They do not require education and training, do not spoil furniture, do not tear up wallpaper. They do not need vaccination, they are easy to transport. Rodents live happily in their cells and do not interfere with anyone. Of course, they also need to be looked after, but this is an easy care. It is enough to purchase a cage, a house, food and a few accessories, follow the feeding regimen, keep the cage clean – and that’s all, then all that remains is to enjoy the company of a funny animal.
There are a lot of species of rodents, and each has its own characteristics. But all of them, without exception, have interesting habits, which are very pleasant to watch. Some animals have special talents. For example, decorative rats can be taught complex tricks, and a tamed chinchilla will literally live on your shoulder.
People who claim that rodents are non-contact, apparently, are not familiar with them. If you want to tame a pet and approach this process correctly, you will get a sympathetic and loyal friend who will gladly sit on your palm and climb onto your shoulder. For guinea pigs and, for example, chinchillas, communication with the owner is not only desirable, but also necessary. Of course, you don’t need to walk with them like with dogs, but you will have to set aside a few minutes a day for games and affection.
Another advantage of rodents is in instilling in young children a sense of responsibility and norms for the treatment of animals. If your family has kids from 2-3 years old, get a rodent without hesitation. Psychologists comment on it like this. A hierarchy is established in the family, and the youngest child feels himself the most protected and loved in it. But the child must be taught not only to accept care, but also to give it. This is where rodents help. A small child will not yet cope with a dog or a cat, but it is quite possible to entrust him with the simplest duties of caring for a rodent. Of course, all the interaction of a child with a pet should take place under the watchful attention of adults. Young children do not yet realize their strength and the degree of vulnerability of the rodent – and may accidentally injure it. It is very important to explain to the baby how to properly handle a pet, what can and cannot be done. Thus, the child will acquire the first skills in dealing with animals and get acquainted with a sense of responsibility – a quality that will definitely come in handy in life.
We have listed the pros of keeping rodents, and the cons … but there are no cons! Do you still have doubts?
