Why does a dog bark at animals on TV?
Owners often encounter strange dog behavior. But sometimes this behavior is annoying – for example, barking at the TV. For example, if animals are shown there (including other dogs). Why does a dog bark at animals on TV?
Scientists have already figured out that dogs can recognize images of other creatures. Including relatives. For example, when they see them among the images of people and other animals. This is an important quality that helps pack animals perform joint activities, including hunting in a group.
But why do some dogs react to relatives seen on TV, while others do not? It probably depends on the personality of the dog. Some dogs are more likely to respond to relatives than others. And sometimes the pet, seeing the image of another dog on the screen, is alert, or even starts running around the TV barking loudly. Dogs that are more likely to defend their territory from intruders may also react more strongly than others. And even more timid or striving to interact with relatives.
At the same time, there are dogs that rely more on scent signals. And they may not even notice other dogs if they don’t smell. And the dogs on TV, of course, do not smell. Dogs that rely more on visual or audio stimuli will react more sharply.
Socialization and upbringing also play a role. If a puppy has seen pictures of dogs on TV in early childhood and is used to not reacting to them, or has been taught to react calmly to it, he will most likely not bark at relatives performing on the screen.
The model of the TV also matters. If your TV is old, the dog is less likely to react to the image – simply because he is less able to distinguish it. But the sound of a barking dog can still react. If the TV is new, it is easier for the dog to make out what is happening on the screen.
If it annoys you that your pet barks at dogs on TV, you can teach him a different behavior. Positive reinforcement will come to the rescue.
You can also keep your dog busy while watching TV. For example, give out a kong with your favorite treat.
