Why do cats run after the laser?
Why do cats love laser pointers so much?
When chasing a laser, your cat acts instinctively. Wild cats had to run after prey and catch it in order to eat. Domestic cats, of course, no longer need to do this, but they still have an innate desire to hunt. Therefore, they perceive the laser as a small animal that tries to run away from them and hide. And this means that the task of the cat is to catch and eat this “animal”.
In addition, the laser attracts cats also because it is difficult for them to ignore it. The peculiarity of cat vision is that they pick up even the slightest movements. And so the rapidly moving red dot is of great interest to them.
Controversy about cats and lasers
There are many opponents of such a game among cat owners. Their main claim is that the laser only teases the cat, but does not allow it to fully satisfy its hunting instincts, since it is impossible to catch it.
Some cats, realizing that this goal is unattainable, stop responding to the laser. Others become very upset that they cannot catch the “prey” and may begin to misbehave. Someone even develops aggression against this background. Therefore, if you notice that your cat’s behavior is deteriorating, you should stop playing with her with a laser pointer.
Alternatively, you can try rewarding your cat after playing with a pointer treat or other (physical!) toy so that she doesn’t get frustrated with the game.
Safety tips
If your cat really enjoys chasing the laser and doesn’t get frustrated with this game, then you don’t have anything to worry about. Chasing a laser is a great way for your cat to vent their energy and show off their feline instincts.
Of course, you still need to follow some safety precautions so as not to harm the cat while playing.
First, do not shine directly into the cat’s eyes. Even toy lasers emit incredibly bright light, so don’t point it directly at a cat (or yourself!), as this can cause vision problems.
Second, provide your cat with other toys. If the laser is your cat’s only entertainment, it’s likely that frustration will build up over time. Make sure your pet has other objects to hunt and play with.
