Why can’t cats eat sweets?

Why not”

There are several reasons why a pet should be protected from sweets from the home table.

The first is dental. The enamel of a cat’s teeth is about 10 times thinner than that of a human. And therefore, the bacteria of the oral cavity, which actively grow precisely when exposed to sugars, can cause really serious damage to tooth enamel, up to the development of caries, periodontitis, and so on.

The second is dietary. All sweets are, by definition, very high in calories, and an animal receiving it on a regular basis, as a rule, goes beyond its normal weight. Simply put, the pet is getting fat, which is fraught with corresponding health complications.

The third is gastroenterological. It is known that an excess of sugars in the body of a pet can provoke diarrhea and upset the balance of the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract, causing an overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines.

Finally, cats simply do not understand the pleasure that a person gets by eating the same food containing sugar. The reason is simple: these animals lack sweet taste receptors.

Although in fairness it should be noted that pets may show interest in some confectionery products – for example, ice cream or condensed milk. In such cases, cats are attracted to the high fat content, not the sweetness.

Exactly what is needed

At the same time, the owner has the opportunity to please the pet by offering him a delicacy designed taking into account the characteristics of the organism and the needs of the pet.

For example, this is the Whiskas Duo Treats line, which offers the cat a wide range of tastes, which, as we have already noted, is important for the animal. We are talking, in particular, about pillows with chicken and cheese, salmon and cheese, beef and cheese, and so on.

You can pay attention to the Dreamies brand or trademarks, under which cat treats are also presented: Astrafarm, TiTBiT, Almo Nature, Felix and others. It is worth noting that delicacies are available not only in different flavors, but also in a wide variety of formats and textures: straws, cream, fillets, mashed potatoes, rolls, and more.

However, goodies are goodies that require a responsible approach. They should be given to the cat in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, which are indicated on the package, and not exceed them so that the pet does not receive an excess amount of calories.
