When can a dog be let off the leash?
For the well-being of the dog, it is very good if he has the opportunity to walk as often and as much as possible without a leash. But, unfortunately, this is not always possible. When can a dog be let off the leash?
To answer the question of whether it is okay to let your dog off the leash, there are three things to consider.
- Legislative requirements. If the dog must be on a leash in a given area, it is best to keep it on a leash. True, in a number of countries, especially in the post-Soviet space, the laws regarding dogs are far from being based on considerations of their well-being. It is up to you to decide whether to follow them or not, but it is still worth considering.
- The place where the dog walks without a leash should be safe. It is better not to let the dog go, for example, near the roadway. Even if she is obedient. A dog is still not a robot, and one moment can be fatal. It’s not worth the risk.
- Of course, you shouldn’t let your dog go off-leash if he hasn’t been trained to call. Moreover, this very call must be worked out in different conditions, with different stimuli. And only in this case the dog can be let off the leash. An exception is a fenced area if, if necessary, you can easily control the pet and, for example, lure it to take it on a leash.
Walking without a leash is a separate pleasure for both the owner and the dog. But in order for them to be happy, you should still follow these minimum rules. If you can’t create contact with the pet and teach reliable recall yourself, you can seek help from a specialist who works with humane methods.
