What turtle to get?
Decided to get a turtle? Congratulations! An important step ahead is to decide on the type of pet. What turtles are there and which ones are best for home keeping?
What kind of turtle to get at home? It depends not only on the wishes of the future owner, but also on his ability to provide the necessary conditions for the pet.
All turtles are divided into water and land, and each species has its pros and cons. For land, for example, they are easier to care for, they are easy to transport, and they also have a docile nature. However, most land tortoises are listed in the Red Book and the choice of species for home keeping is limited. Aquatic turtles, on the other hand, are very common. They are funny, bright and active, it is a pleasure to admire them. But you should understand that caring for an aquaterrarium is more difficult. In addition, you will not be able to take a water friend on a trip, and in general, it is better to admire such a turtle from the side: this is not a contact pet. And it’s not just about lifestyle: aquatic turtles are often obstinate and even bite their owners. You have to keep your eyes peeled for them!
For any turtle – no matter if it is land or water – you will need a terrarium with special equipment (more on this in the article “”) and high-quality food designed for a particular type of turtle. In the terrarium, the future owner will have to regularly maintain cleanliness. Of course, updating the litter of a land turtle is easier than changing the water in an aquaterrarium, but over time you will get used to it and will easily cope with the task. However, cleanliness is not the most important thing.
For a healthy and happy life of a turtle in a terrarium, the conditions necessary for it must always be maintained. The parameters of air and water are individual for each specific species, and before making your choice, you must definitely familiarize yourself with them. Honestly answer yourself the question: can you provide the pet with the necessary care?
Before buying a turtle, study as much information as possible about the selected species. How fast does a turtle grow, to what size does it grow, how big does it need a terrarium? The life expectancy of a pet is also important: in some varieties it exceeds 50 years.
For keeping at home, it is best to start a turtle of a small size (up to 50 cm in length), relatively unpretentious, with a friendly disposition and common, so that there are no difficulties with the purchase.
Among the land, the undisputed leader is, and among the water -,, and. In our country, you can easily purchase these turtles, arrange a home for them and find the necessary information on caring for them.
Please note that there are no dwarf land or aquatic turtles! There are no decorative species among these pets, and if the seller claims otherwise, it is better not to deal with him.
And the last thing you need to pay attention to is the age of the turtle and the most favorable period for the purchase. If it is desirable to take dogs and cats at an early age, then turtles are better in the “teenage” when the animal’s body is already strong. Babies are much more prone to various diseases, and it can be difficult even for experienced owners to leave them.
If possible, purchase a turtle between May and September. At low temperatures, there is a risk of catching a turtle during transportation or acquiring an already cold pet.
Be careful, and you will easily acquire the best little friend!
