What to feed finches
Finches are small and surprisingly beautiful songbirds, representatives of the family of finches weavers. Keeping these birds at home does not require special skills, but they need the right diet to feel good. We will tell you what food and treats are suitable for these feathered friends.
In feeding any pet, it is necessary to proceed from what kind of food is typical for him in his natural habitat. Amadins get fresh seeds and grains for themselves, they can diversify their diet with fruits, larvae, and berries.
Today it is possible to purchase specially designed ready-made feeds for finches. Discuss food choices with your veterinarian. Focus not on the most budget option, but on the one that better meets the needs of a feathered friend in terms of composition. High quality food is an investment in your pet’s health and longevity.
Pay special attention to product packaging. Amadins grow in length up to a maximum of 11 centimeters. Such a bird will not eat much, so the food should be stored for a long time without compromising its quality, taste and useful properties. It is worth making a choice in favor of vacuum packaging. Be sure to check the expiration date on the packaging.
There are several useful ingredients, the presence of which in the composition is an advantage of the feed. Let’s talk about three of them in more detail.
- Common millet contains many proteins, improves metabolism and improves immunity, is easily absorbed by the body of a feathered friend.
- Yellow millet contains protein, vitamins, microelements, helps the bird recover faster after an illness, improves blood circulation.
- Perilla white is a herbal ingredient that strengthens the musculoskeletal system and the cardiovascular system. Increases the palatability of feed for finches, especially useful for maintaining the health of older birds.
What to feed finches besides a special ready-made diet? Their food can be varied with home-sprouted seeds, a piece of celery or a peeled cucumber. From fresh vegetables and fruits, carrots, bananas, apples, pears, zucchini are also suitable as treats. Vegetables can be given to birds both raw and boiled. Dried fruits like dried apricots and dates can also be to your ward’s taste, but make sure that these are dried fruits, not candied treats. The main thing is to finely chop or grate everything so that it is convenient for the birds to eat.
Sunflower seeds can also be a delicacy, but, of course, not fried. In summer, do not miss the opportunity to treat the finches with fresh wild berries – raspberries, blueberries, strawberries. A good solution would be special ready-made treats for birds based on fruits and honey – sticks, biscuits. Do not get carried away with treats, they should make up about 10% of the diet.
Do not overdo it with treats and do not forget to include them in the daily feeding rate.
The drinking bowl and bathing bowl in the finches cage must be kept clean, rinsed daily with hot water. They should be filled with filtered boiled water, which must first be slightly cooled so that the birds do not burn themselves.
Sand in the cage must be used special, purified, containing an additional source of minerals – ground shells. Sand from the nearest beach is not suitable for finches. Cuttlefish shell, which can be purchased at a pet store and put in a cage, will help fill the lack of calcium in birds.
An important accessory in the decoration of the cage is a mineral stone. Amadins will be able to peck it little by little, making up for the lack of minerals in the body. Manufacturers of specialized feed for finches offer special bio-stones: they are a complete mineral complex with a combination of more than 10 minerals.
There are products that are strictly forbidden to give to finches. Topping the stop list are dill and onion. Amadins cannot eat canned and fried foods. It is important to remember that feeding finches at home should be based on specialized food for these birds. Never feed them food from the table. It is not found in their natural habitat, therefore, it will only harm the digestive system and the well-being of the bird as a whole. If you have guests, warn them not to feed the birds.
Amadins are sensitive to strong odors. Smoking and cooking hot food with a pronounced smell in a room with a cage where finches live is unacceptable.
We hope that our recommendations have helped you understand the intricacies of the correct diet of finches. We wish your feathered wards to always be in a good mood and delight you with cheerful chirping.
