What should a show dog be able to do?

Participation in exhibitions is not as simple as it may seem to an ignorant person. The dog needs not only the ability to enter the ring and not eat the expert and competitors, but also the ability to show his best side. What should a show dog be able to do?

What is required of you dogs at the show?
If you are going to take your pet into the show ring, you need to know what awaits you there.
- Choose a handler. This is a person who is able to show the dog in the most favorable light. You can be a handler yourself or a professional, a veteran of “show battles”.
- The handler demonstrates that the dog has all teeth and bite.
- Handler with a dog trot in a circle (in a group and singly).
- The handler and the dog trot in a straight line (from and to the expert).
- The dog stands in a conformation stance and remains motionless for approximately 1,5 minutes while the examiner feels it and evaluates its appearance.
How does everything work at the exhibition and what is it for?
To examine the teeth, the handler sits the dog down, raises (does not lift!) its head and lifts its lips, exposing the front teeth and gums. The posterior teeth on both sides are then shown for the examiner to count. Sometimes experts prefer to part the dog’s lips themselves, so your pet should be quite calm about such encroachment from an outsider. When moving, the dog should run next to the handler, not trying to play with competitors or people, jump or bark. The optimal distance between dogs is approximately one body.

When moving in a circle alone, the dog demonstrates the manner of carrying the head, the strength of the top, the width of the step, the coordination of the movement of the limbs, the freedom of movement, the manner of carrying the tail. four-legged friend, how parallel and widely set they are. During the stand and palpation, the dog’s psyche is also evaluated. If she shies away from the expert, does not allow herself to be approached or touched, or, conversely, shows aggression, she should not be allowed to breed and therefore cannot count on a high mark. Also, during the palpation, the expert assesses how strong your pet’s back is, what condition he is in, what is the condition of the coat. During the stance, the dog must stand still and behave confidently. The task of the judge is to describe it and decide what mark to give. Preparation for the exhibition is very important, one might even say plays a decisive role in the success of the event. Indeed, often a more “exterior” dog, which is not sufficiently prepared, loses to a not so “pedigree” outwardly relative, who has shown himself from the best side.
