What is the difference between Huskies and Malamutes?

Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are similar in many ways. They are easy to confuse, especially if you are not a connoisseur of dogs. Both of these breeds were bred as sled dogs, so they are distinguished by stamina and a huge amount of energy. They are also similar in appearance, because they appeared in similar conditions – in the snows of Siberia and Alaska. However, there are several important differences between these breeds. In order not to make a mistake when choosing a pet or making a compliment to the owner of such a dog, you should figure out what they are all the same different.

Malamute and Husky: Differences

1. Eyes

Husky’s calling card is their piercing blue eyes. Sometimes the breed has a brown or amber color. The eyes of Malamutes are usually brown, and the blue color of the iris is considered a marriage.

2. Tail

The husky’s tail hangs down when the dog is in a relaxed mood, and curves into a crescent shape when the dog is in play and joy. The Malamute’s tail is more fluffy, it is usually raised above the back, resembling a fluttering plume.

3. Physique

The Malamute has a slightly larger build and heavier bones. This is a very strong and hardy dog. Huskies are not so massive, but they significantly outperform the Malamute in speed and can successfully participate in racing competitions.

4. Head

Huskies have a narrow muzzle, while Malamutes have wider cheekbones and massive jaws.

5. Sight

You can’t confuse the look of a husky with anything: light spots on the eyebrows give them an inimitable stern expression. Even the smallest puppy of this breed looks like an evil boss. On the muzzle of Malamutes, on the contrary, there is always a friendly and good-natured expression.

6. Wool

Comparing husky and malamute, you can pay attention to the quality of wool. In the first it is soft, and in the second it is hard with a thick undercoat. By one stroke, you can understand who is nearby – a Siberian or a native of Alaska.

7. Color

Malamutes most often have a gray-white wolf color, but sable, red, black and white colors can also be found. White bottom is a must. As for the husky, they have more diverse colors – from completely white to completely black.

8. Character

Siberian Huskies have a reputation for being destructive, especially at a young age. To direct their energy in a constructive direction, a lot of active movement, games and walks are required. These dogs are very curious, independent, like to run away from the owner and play pranks in every possible way. They tend to bark a lot and loudly. Compared to them, silent Malamutes seem to be the epitome of calm. But to cope with them is also not easy: a strong hand is needed for the proper upbringing of a Malamute. These dogs are quite stubborn, and it takes a lot of work for them to recognize the authority of the owner.

Using the tips on how to distinguish a Malamute from a Husky, it is easy enough to do it yourself. However, despite the difference between the Husky and the Malamute, they have one thing in common: they need space and a lot of movement. These dogs cannot be kept in a city apartment – a private house with a large territory would be ideal for them.
